Actually the two cable types have switched back and forth with technology improvements. Dual link DVI can carry a lot of data, but so can the HDMI cables designed for 4k monitors.
At this point it's moot, unless you are running multi monitor setups. (or something like G-Sync.)

I've used both on my setup and the differences are so minor, that I suspect it's variations in the actual circuitry on the boards.
I've stuck with DVI only because I have bottom facing ports on my monitor and the HDMI was occasionally falling out, whereas the DVI has screws to make it more secure.

Bob
HDMI is not as fast as "displayport" 1.2.
HDMI = DVI with sound that's the only difference.

Forgive me for bumping this topic, but how is the GTX 960 performing for you Buzz? Are you able to max out all of the settings for TS2016 with it?

DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort are functionally identical as far as PCs are concerned (unless getting into very high refresh rate 144hz+ monitors.)

The only thing that affects the "washed out" look would be the "Output dynamic range" setting in the "Change resolution" section of Nvidia Control Panel.

My color problem went away when I changed the setting in the NVIDIA Control Panel to use NVIDIA settings. The reason I am using a HDMI cable is because that is the high performance plug available on my Acer S230HL monitor.

Look back at Edwin's suggestions for settings. That where I ended up.

The settings for my 970 were defaulted to Edwin's settings. I have no problems maxing out TS2016 or Trainz.

In the NVIDIA control panel under resolution. If you don't know where to find it just right click on your desk top.

That screen has a few more option than when you are using a DVI cable. Strange how that setting on your computer wasn't the right setting, as mine was. I have never touched that setting even after putting a new card in 6 months a go.
