UP SD40-2 Lights

Unread postby RSTom » Thu Sep 01, 2011 5:46 am

Hi guys, I was wondering if you could enlighten me, 'scuse the pun.

I'm currently working on the SD40-2 which will replace the core version in 2012. It's gonna be snazzy!

What I'm interested in is the lights located above the front trucks as I know very little about them. Are they only on the front? Are they specific to certain companies or certain batches? Where exactly are the lights produced from? Any and all information will be helpful, I don't even have a name for them to research so it's proving a little trying. !*hp*!

Tom them are called Platform lights they are in the front in also in the back in the same spot. Also could you add the Lights above the Trucks i have attach some photos for you
Also tom are we going to be able to have are headlights on Dim? Could you make these models where we have a switch for Headlight for Dim and to bright?

Almost all EMD Units have these lights

Number broads front and back
Step Lights front and back
Platform lights front and back
Marker lights in the noise only if they still keep them after the mergers
Strobe lights Mostly for Yard service or Remote service.-
Flashing ditch lights- This goes for NS And CSX. -Early BN Models had these as well but not anymore.
Mars lights- Mostly on SP Units. bakc in day.

Notice the lights above the trucks and also the back lights on the lead unit

Lights will depend on series number , the pic you have is an SD40-2 phase 1 either an A or B or C and as delivered to UP will only have lights on the frame on either side of the cab . Phase 2 will have lights inside the sets front and rear . Some UP 40's will differ in that they have been brought from other roads and may have lights above the front truck and also the steps.

So say the EMD manuals and batch delivery numbers.

ETA : Don't you already have lights in the steps on the model on the blog ?

Could you also please make operational in-cab ligts (just like in the P42DC Genesis)? Would be awesome.

Just to avoid misunderstandings:

1 - Head Lights
2 - Marker Light
3 - Ditch Lights (NS and CSX versions can flash)
4 - Step Lights
5 - Platform Lights

There are so many diffrent production versions of the SD40-2 so that not every loco will have every of these lights.

Number 2 isn't a marker light. It's just a light to light up the front walkway. These are marker lights:

And when used:

NOTE: Marker lights will always be Red. Freight Railroad's today don't use them anymore. Only exceptions being CN (SD70M-2's and a few GEVO's that are set up to be used as DPU's ) and ex. Conrail stuff on CSX. The rest of the roads removed and or plated over them.

Also of note the first three UP loco's in RSTom's post were originally CNW units. The nose mounted "Gong Bell" on the 1st and 3rd unit give them away. And the last is a Tunnel Motor. Most likely ex. SP. Yes I'm bored today. !**duh*!!

How about an SD40-2 with no dynamic brakes so we could have some proper looking SOO and GT locos:

Cheers for the input guys, helpful stuff.

At the moment I'm only working on the core Union Pacific SD40-2, I can't really comment on what else we're planning for the SD40-2 at the moment.

Yes a non-dymanic sd40-2 would be very much appreciated, missouri pacific if you please. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPi ... id=2354023 It would be an easy one to do seeing as RS.com already has the base model as well as the UP license. So it is just maybe an hour or so of reworking a current model.
