Virginia & Truckee Repaints

Unread postby CArailroader » Mon Jun 03, 2019 4:15 am

Thanks to Buzz, I was able to get the numberboard background showing on the consolidation and thus was able to move on to show you all my latest repaint project: the modern Virginia and Truckee Railroad. Currently, the modern day version of the V&T exists in our simulator thanks to dleeboy2002, so I thought it was time to repaint a few things for it. The first is Smokebox's Consolidation into the V&T 29, also a 2-8-0. Second are Smokebox's coaches from the Jupiter package fitted with knuckle couplers. I am doing the Clerestory coach, emigrant coach with square windows, caboose, and baggage car. The caboose, and baggage car are the only things left.

They look really good but I’m confused - is it the Virginia and Truckee or is it the Virgina and Truckee RR? The loco has one, the coaches the other.

Nice !!*ok*!!

But wouldn't there be a problem with the missing air brakes on the coaches. I don't think that the Connie could blow the right whistle codes...

It's nia... I just don't know how to spell words with more than four letters. !DUH!

Correct, the Connie can not interact with the car's handbrake script and you must release the handbrakes before you get going. Because of this the cars do "slosh" around a bit. I was going to try and see about messing with the simulation file and see if I can't get airbrakes on the cars.

I went back and not only spelled it correctly but added a little bit of drop shadow for just a tiny bit of ornate work one might typically see on the 19th century cars. I added knuckles to the caboose so only the baggage car is left. I got most of the slack taken away by putting in a value of 0 for the spring and dampening coefficient in the knuckle coupler bin, there is still some but not as bad as it was before. I copied and pasted the original bin with a new name so it doesn't overwrite the original that is there. The only other thing I can't figure out and I may have to ask Mike himself, but does anyone know if there a way to have the handbrake released as soon as its in game?

The brakes can be found in the bin files of the coaches. Just compare them with other rolling stock.

I think the handbrakes are set by the lua script (.out file) of each waggon. You can try to remove the ScriptComponent section in the bin file and see what happens.

Thank you for that on both accounts. I got air brakes working (Mike had most of it set up, but I did end up copying and pasting from the BLE 350 series passenger car for slightly more "modern" and powerful airbrakes to match the 29 in current excursions.

And deleting the script as suggested keeps the handbrakes released when a scenario is started. I also looked at the coupler bin again after some more research and modified it a bit more so now there is hardly any slack action at all.

Now I've also gone back and tweeked the lettering a bit more to where it looks much sharper and used the same colors on the baggage car. However, it seems much lighter on the baggage car because of the lighter background color. So question to any and all who are interested: Do you think I should darken the color of the letters or keep it so that the coloring is the same? Pictures for context and then comparison against the original.

I will also note that there will be two versions of these coach repaints. One which will have knuckle couplers and represent the modern tourist era. The second will keep the link and pin couplers and the original script so that if anyone creates a repaint of any of Mike's 19th century steamers to V&T, there will be at least coaches for them. Plus there is one V&T steamer (2-6-0 "Truckee") WIP by GutoNicolucci

I think leave colouring as you have it. Well done and credit to you for covering the bases of 2 eras.

As the coaches have been finished and uploaded, the next project begins:

Thank you for making these. Quick question, is the repaint for the Consolidation also done?

It's all looking great! Well done for fathoming out the brakes - you spotted that there are some hidden air brakes in the simulation files for the cars. They're used to stop the cars from rolling away when parked on a steep gradient.

If you want to make the liveries even closer to the V&T style, you could also replace the brown with green, like in this photos of car #10:

So with the release of GutoNicolucci's fabulous Mogul, I set to work repainting so that we may have the other 2-6-0s of the V&T. Very easy to repaint, but the name and number plate both are part of 3D model. The clash between the new textures and the model aren't as visible from far away but the close up it's noticeable. So if that bothers you rivet counters, you'll have to ignore it or don't download it.
