WIP Montour Route

Unread postby Rich_S » Tue Apr 19, 2011 7:19 am

Hello Group,
I'm still making progress on the Montour railroad. Here is a railfan adventure I put together to showcase what I have thus far:

The Montour's main yard at Groveton, PA.

Leaving Groveton and passing under state route 51.

Locations on the Montour were known as stations, even though a physical building was not present at the location. This is Ewing Station at Hassem Road

Kik Industries at Beaver Grade Road.

Scott Station with the Nelson Industries spur in the background.

Continuing on with the tour...

This is Briggs & Turivas Scrap yard, many old and out dated railroad cars met the scrappers torch here at Briggs & Turivas.

Here is Grub's Resturant and Enlow Road at Cliff Mine Station. By this date the mine has long been sealed.

Cliff Mine Road at the East end of Cliff Mine siding.

Jefferytown Tunnel just West of Imperial.

A few shots in Imperial, begining with Enlow crossing.

Continuing on with the tour, we have just left Imperial and we are now approaching North Star. Today North Star is just a little used wye, but at one time the South leg of the wye connected the Mifflin Extension with the original line to Santiago

Image

We have finally reached Boggs. Boggs was a storage yard on the Montour, plus two short branches left the main line here at Boggs.
Image
Image

Leaving Boggs and the Champion prep plant behind us we now are approaching Geary curve.
Image
Image

Next we approach the small community of McAdams.
Image
Image
Image

Finally we reach the world famous McDonald Viaduct.
Image

Beyond McDonald we pass though Peacock cut, which was once the site of a tunnel, but because of a water problem the tunnel was daylighted and Peacock siding.
Image
Image

We are now passing Southview, a small community located along the Montour ROW. Southview also had a interchange track with the P&WV Railroad.
Image
Image

We have just cleared Glimore Jct and we are now on the Westland Secondary passing the Morris Mine.

Actually the Montour had SW9's they ran in four unit consists. The Montour figured one SW9 could handle 11 loaded hoppers, so a 4 unit set was good for a 44 car train. Originally the Montour was owned 50 / 50 by the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad. During the Conrail era, the P&LE purchased Conrail's 50% in the railroad. Shortly after that the P&LE retired the SW9's and replaced them with SW1500's. The main purpose of the Montour Railroad was to serve the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania.

Rich,

When your masterpiece route is released I am going to declare a universal holiday in your honor. We'll call it "Montour Day".

Thanks for your ongoing efforts. I cannot wait to get my hands on the finished route.
