Downtown Buildings Version 1 Released, V1 Version



Just released this first part of the set to my website. Once I complete the full set it will be uploaded here, but until then it will only be available at my website.

Here's the link to get these first couple of buildings.

Once the next phases come out all you will have to do is install them and it will just add more buildings to your folder, it won't alter whatever you've already placed.

A new apartment for the set.

Well, actually, it isn't a new apartment since it's from the 30's and 40's.

Been working on this building almost all day so far. Will texture tomorrow.


And if you're wondering, it's 16 stories high, not counting the 2 story high lobby. So more likely it's 18 stories high.

For those that don't know, I just figured out the secret on how to drop the poly count dramitically on a object that was made in sketchup. You scroll your camera inside of the model and then delete each and every inside face that is there since all you will need is the outer face anyways.

Then scroll the camera back out and then press delete. If you did it right the inner faces will be deleted, but not the outer face, which you will see in the game.

With this knowledge you can take a really polygon heavy model and make it much lighter on polygon's, but only delete what's on the inside. After you delete the inner wall you will see whatever is on the outside ledge facing in, don't delete it or you will have to undo.

So far I've been able to reduce this building from the original 13000 plus poly level to now just a little over 9000 poly's, and not done poly reducing yet. Perhaps soon I might be able to start paint on it.

More buildings of this type is quite possible, now that I figured out the secret of poly reducing.

Test version of the new apartment in game.

Was able to lower the poly level and size it to the correct size.

Started some painting on the new apartment.

Because of the rarity of this kind of apartment I'll probably only do one version of it.

Also, it's a total of 7179 polygons, do you think that's a decent number of poly's for a building of this size. Keep it to be known, it's 16 stories high with a two story lobby on the bottom, making it more like 18 stories high.

I think it looks great, JP, as does all your work. I just wish I could wrap my head around designing a route so I could utilize your "stuff"

About reducing the poly count: I don't see why there is a different mesh for each floor. The main part of the building could be modeled as a huge cube with a few detail meshes glued on, the floors being simulated with texturing.

There isn't a different mesh, it's just the texturing that makes it look like that. The model was built as one solid structure with spaces for the windows glued in.

Now, back on track.

Had to make a decision to leave the facebook games to go back to what I do best. Was getting too addicted to the new Battle Pirates game on facebook.

Will be updating the older buildings to this set and lowering the poly level with my new found knowledge. Before releasing the set that is.

Some more progress on my New York Apartment 3 version 1.

I've decided to make at least 2 different versions of this and that will be the max of it.

These were a rare design of apartment, so they wouldn't have been littered throughout the entire city. You might have had a couple in different parts of the city, but at most times, you only saw one of each building in one city.

Have about 45 more buildings to build for the set and then it will be finish.

Working on a new version of my biggest apartment for the game. Once I finish with RW a freeware route builder could easily build a metropolis without needing any payware route in order to do so.
