Any use to anybody?

Unread postby SAR704 » Mon May 18, 2020 10:21 am

I was just thinking of the practicality of converting more photos of mainly South Australian gum trees into static scenery objects. It then occurred to me that I tend to use less than 5% of the number I have actually made into scenery objects and/or finalised .TGA textures.

But anyhow, despite the fact that the route I was working on hit a dead end as a result of an inconvenience last year (won't go into further detail), I thought that some route creators might be able to put these mostly dormant scenery objects to use. I am not saying that I won't attempt route building again, but just wanted to bring it up.

In this image, it shows one of the default trees I used, with several in the background that can be brought up to standard, albeit as 2D objects only.

I am not by any means promising anything here. But I just want to find out whether or not will be wasting my time trying to have them uploaded to the file library.

Scenery assets, especially trees and foliage are always welcome. Of the the almost 2,000 users on this forum, many do not post or check every topic thoroughly, so I wouldn't expect responses to this thread to be a direct correlation to potential use of your asset. If you want to share it, feel free. I don't see a downside to having your work creating the asset see extended use.

The concerns are valid, but this isn't a paid advertising campaign. Just another topic in which reading is optional to anybody :).

Anyhow, I've so far come up with 18 2D models that may be ideal, in regards to alleged quality, and consistency. This is from the 208 or so textures I've converted over in under 14 years. I will review them soon and try and optimise them for use.

One of them is the third oldest of the lot with fairly average photo quality, taken with an old Olympus cheapie Camera in 2006, but it still looks stylish in my opinion.

But I have one question. One of them is copied from a 'Streetview' capture with the location not actually noted at the time (around 5 years ago), and not tracked down as of yet. Will this be legal to distribute for freeware use?

And in addition to trees, I have some 2D foliage that might be useful such as grass, several buses, a few pines. They'll need to be touched up, but this can be done in a reasonable time frame. I am also ok to provide a few (Australian) houses and other buildings if they are going to be of any use. Perhaps I could name it 'Australian freeware asset pack' (never to be used for commercial use). Reason is that I have used public photos to create some of the assets, and also, they're my models, not the users. I also have some terrain textures that may be useful, but don't your breath on these being released for public use.

Edited to add additional info

I will also mention that almost none of the trees are above 20 metres in height.
