1950s GN Marias Pass (Workshop Route)

Unread postby GreatNortherner » Mon Apr 06, 2020 8:29 am

Hi,

A backdated Marias Pass is now available on the Workshop. This route follows the same principles as my backdated Montana Hi-Line and uses an extra asset pack to transport the Marias Pass route half a century into the past. The target year is 1955, that's the ETT which I based my work on, but the scenery and track layouts should match a wider period from the 1940s into even the BN days*, when the semaphores got replaced on both sides of the pass. Of course, some (no, a lot!) of artistic license had to be taken in many places but overall I'm satisfied with the results.
*) if you squint and ignore all the old cars on the roads

To run this route, you'll need to own Marias Pass and also the Hi-Line DLC. Stevens Pass, though listed in the Workshop requirements, is only optional. I started with this project many years ago, soon after the release of Stevens Pass, but there should not be any critical assets in use from that DLC (mainly a few scenery items around Kalispell, I think).

I hope everythings works okay with this upload and that you'll enjoy the modified route. Please let me know if there are bad bugs or serious issues.

You can subscribe to the route on the Workshop via this link here below:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2050430868
There you'll also find a much more detailed description, the link to the manual, a a couple dozen screenshots.

A first (two-part) scenario is already available on my website. This is GN #2, the eastbound Empire Builder. It is based on the same timetable as the #2 scenario for the Hi-Line (and also uses same season/date settings in case anybody wants to do the complete run from Whitefish to Havre:

Beautiful work! I'm always up for another GN route !!*ok*!! Out of curiosity, where did you find a copy of the timetable? I tried asking my old friend Google, but the only result of note was a thousand page PDF with all the track charts for the GN collected together.

Hi,

You can find (almost?) every ETT and PTT of the GN's history in the joint archives of the GNRHS and NPRHA:
http://www.gn-npjointarchive.org

That site is an absolute treasure trove for GN and NP fans, with an incredible wealth of old documents, pictures, and data.

In addition, the GNHRA sells for a modest fee a near endless amount of reference materials.

Cheers

Thanks Michael! I'll have a look into writing some scenarios for the route. The scenery is beautiful, and the custom assets really bring it to life !*salute*!

Thanks! !*cheers*!

I'm afraid I have to report a small mishap: I mixed up the two .rwp files for the scenarios that I uploaded with the route yesterday. The Empire Builder run and the scenario scenery template. So if you didn't download them both yesterday, you got the wrong one. Please redownload both files from the original links if that is the case for you.

Sorry for the confusion.

I subscribed to the new workshop route 1950s Marias Pass as soon as I saw the route announced on Railworks America. Another 50s route is right up my street, and the screenshots were amazing.

But, unfortunately, although Steam now tells me that I am subscribed the workshop/route page also tells me 'You need DLC to use this item'.

The 1950s Marias Pass route will not download (I've given it a few days), and it seems Steam cannot believe that as a Dutchman I have Marias Pass, but I do. I bought the route in 2013 before the BNSF restrictions were put in place.

Today, searching for the Marias Pass route in Steam draws a blank, as if the route does not exist for me.

So I am at a loss what to do. I wonder if there is a workaround for non-US owners of Marias Pass that I could try (before contacting Steam/Dovetail)?

FWIW I’m in Canada and didn’t run into the same issue.

Hi, I believe I found a bug in the route while I was creating a scenario for the steam workshop. In the Columbia Falls Wye, northern connecting rails are broken and not tied to each other, although they look like connected! After I deleted the 2 sides of the broken connection connect the wye to the rails around milepost 1212, it gets fixed.

I thought you would like to know.

Thanks for the route again!

Marcus, did you get this sorted out? Outside USA even if you have the relevant US routes you tend to get the not available message if you use Drive/Workshop in sim - same for me in the UK.

If you subscribe through the workshop page (not in Drive/Workshop) it will download the route, then you can manually install by going to wherever you have Railworks installed . Follow through SteamApps/Workshop/Content/24010. Within 24010 you will find a file 2050430868 and within that file another named rout_f3e9f742-062a-4589-aeee-41d6c03b057b. Open this up with, say, 7Zip and you will have the Content/Routes/f3e9f742-062a-4589-aeee-41d6c03b057b.

Drag this to your Railworks folder then install the additional file from Michael's site.

Going through the Drive/Workshop route sucks in so many ways and can often end with the sim freezing.

Hi Rod,

Thanks you for coming back to me. The problems I had were caused at my end. I noticed that my TS2020 was flagged as 'not installed' by Steam (why that would be so, with the game running OK I don't know, although I don't seem to be the only one with this problem...). I did a reinstall of TS and now everything (including Marias) is now labeled 'installed'. I then had another go at subscribing to the Maris 50s route which finally led to a succesful download. The route is now installed and I got both of the scenarios to start.

You learn something new everyday.... :D
