EMD SD75M & SD75I Physics Mod Pack Released

Due to popular demand, I churned this one out on short notice:


This is the EMD SD75 Series Physics Modification pack for the SD75M and SD75I.

In order to utilize this freeware physics upgrade, you must have purchased the "Train Simulator: BNSF SD75 Loco Add-On" pack available at Steam: http://store.steampowered.com/app/65259/

This is a freeware pack; in no way is it to be used for commercial purposes. You are free, however to further modify the physics enhancements found in this pack for personal use if you so choose.

THIS IS NOT A SOUND UPGRADE PACK. Physics adjustments made around the existing sounds.

The purpose of this pack is to adjust the locomotive weight, motor amperage limits, and traction and braking effort values for more realistic operation.

Also included is the signature JohnS brake fix.

General Parameter Change Log (same for both locomotive classes):
1. Adjusted locomotive weights slightly.
2. Adjusted tractive effort ratings and curves for individual locomotive models based on the specifications listed below.
3. Adjusted dynamic brake effort ratings and curves for individual locomotive models based on the specifications listed below.
4. Adjusted fuel consumption and prime mover RPM range.
5. Reduced amount of coupler stretch.

Specifications for individual models:
1. EMD SD75M (EMD 16-710G3C; 4300 GHP)
a. Starting tractive effort of 175,000 lbs (778.44 kN) up to 8.687 mph.
b. Traction horsepower at wheel is 4,050 hp (3,022.389 kW); efficiency rating of 90%.
c. Max Dynamic Brake effort of 86,850 lbs (386.328 kN) from 22.4 mph to 9 mph; fade to 0 lbs @ 3 mph.
d. Dynamic Brake horsepower at wheel is 4,556 hp (3,400 kW).
e. Increased weight of 176.903 metric tons (390,000 lbs).
f. Maximum speed of 70 mph.
g. Fuel consumption @ notch 8 is 205 gallons per hour.
h. Prime mover RPM range is 290 to 950.
i. Ammeter range is -700 to 1785.

2. EMD SD75I (EMD 16-710G3C; 4300 GHP)
a. Starting tractive effort of 175,000 lbs (778.44 kN) up to 8.687 mph.
b. Traction horsepower at wheel is 4,050 hp (3,022.389 kW); efficiency rating of 90%.
c. Max Dynamic Brake effort of 86,850 lbs (386.328 kN) from 22.4 mph to 9 mph; fade to 0 lbs @ 3 mph.
d. Dynamic Brake horsepower at wheel is 4,556 hp (3,400 kW).
e. Increased weight of 180.532 metric tons (398,000 lbs).
f. Maximum speed of 70 mph.
g. Fuel consumption @ notch 8 is 205 gallons per hour.
h. Prime mover RPM range is 290 to 950.
i. Ammeter range is -700 to 1785.

IMPORTANT; Install Instructions

1. Locate the RSC assets folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\RailWorks\Assets\RSC\SD75Pack01)
2. Open Railworks_EMD_SD75M_and_SD75I_Physics_Mod_Pack.rar
3. Drag the file folder from the .rar in step 2 into the directory you opened in step 1. Overwrite if asked.
4. The installation should be complete. Run TS2016 to check.

I have also received word that this pack also fixes the bugged headlights. I also wonder how some of the freight physics packs utilize the ammeter for the tractive effort value not implemented on some engines.

Can a mod please move this thread to the Freeware Add-On Releases forum in lieu me making a brand new thread there just for this?

Additionally mod has been updated to include a fix for the headlights.

I have tried a short run of a long varied freight with the SD75i with a double header and a helper.
I feel acceleration and deceleration much better than the original, at any speed., though it still decelerates a little fast at low speeds (yard speeds) than I would "think" is right.
I will do other testings. I want to try it in a flat route like Ohio Steel 2.

The packs that use the ammeter for TE values are the ones that include AC motored locomotives. The DC motored locomotives use the ammeter as it functions as close to real life values as possible.

The ES44DC and SD70M-2 are DC motored locomotives, and they use TE values for the ammeter on the HUD *!!wink!!*

Not true. I've had ES44DCs show Amps. Namely the early ones on BNSF like the 7600s.

It might have a headlight fix.
I never put out a fix, but I did post a few months back what the problem was in the engine.bin and how to fix it. The numbers for the notches for the levers were wrong and so the lights would be on or off, but not synced with the ditch and headlights like they were supposed to be in the external view.

That was few months back and it could be the number of notches were wrong as well. !!jabber!!

It's not spring coefficient value which should be 0 on Type E couplers.

Max distance 0.04 freight or 0.02 on passenger cars.
Minimum distance 0.001 or 0.01
Spring coefficient 0
Damping 0 -600 0 for freight and 600 for passenger cars.
Target distance 0
Target distance set to 0 stops creeping train problem on long trains when stopped.

That gives about 6" slack per pair of couplers on freight cars.

The damping and spring coefficients are for Buffer Coupling used in other countries.
Before anyone tells me I'm wrong, Mike and Larry are using my settings that people love. Mike Rennie first got them from me for the FEF-3 and Larry (Mainelines) uses them on his Plate B and Plate C FMC boxcars. !*roll-laugh*!

May have to delete the BluePrint.pak on the modified stock to get those settings to work. (usually not though) That's usually a problem if you use a quick drive scenario for before and after testing. Or any saved scenario.

Note: Great Northerner's couplers are a we bit different and need something like 1000 on the damping. That includes the stock on the RW&A.

It should be noted that RSC uses the type E falsely as a blanket 3D model and physics figures on many engines that actually have type F's.
BN SD40-2s and some GP units like the 39-2s used Type Fs
Every railroad but CSX uses type F's on their heavy units like the ES44, Dash 9, etc.
Coal Cars and some grain hoppers are equipped with these as well.
Type F's have significantly less draft travel between like types (about 1.5 inches), and no vertical travel between like types except what is given by shank of the coupler.
Spring Coefficient would actually work well to simulate End of Car cushioning of the drawbars which adds a large amount of travel per car on top of the about 3 inches of slack.

I in particular noticed that on the ACS-64, HHP-8, ALP-46, Surfliner Alstom 6900 cabcar, and Bombardier Bilevel cabs. In reality they use Type F couplers, so in real life they wouldn't work right in push mode. The fact they have Type Es ingame is a pet peeve of mine, it looks way out of place on many passenger equipment.
