AT&N Consolidation Won't Run + No Whistle

Unread postby mysterytrain » Fri Nov 01, 2013 9:00 pm

Today I purchased and installed the AT&N Consolidation steam locomotive from STEAM.

However, when I place it in a scenario there's no throttle control showing up on the screen to operate it, and also the whistle will not blow. The bell, sander and other items do work.

Any idea of what has happened; this is a new bug for me to ever experience.
Keep on chugging,
Steve

My BCLC copy runs just fine, but I don't have a whistle sound either. The steam graphically releases from the whistle but no sound either in the cab or outside. By the way, I would really appreciate a Cimarron & Pacific version. I have relettered the Britkits Mogul & Prairie using an off-white lettering color and the roadnames in all caps (CIMARRON & PACIFIC) using Railroad Roman font. If you can tell me which file to edit, I can use the BCLC reskin.

By the way, thanks for your excellent work. The consolidation is one of my favorites.

The whistle sound bug is, I believe, a bug in RW that manifests itself in the Connie, among others. It happens if you've been editing a scenario and then play the scenario without going back to the main screen first. The whistle should work if you do that, or exit the game and start again (without going via the editor). Also, clearing the cache from within the game's menu should help.

I've never heard of a bug where the the throttle doesn't show up. Let me test my own copy, just to make sure the latest updates to TS haven't interfered with the model.

Something you do have to be careful of when using the HUD (F4, that is) is to make sure you use a version of the loco and tender (and scenarios) with "HUD" appended to the name. If it doesn't say "HUD", then it's the expert/advanced version. With that one, the HUD throttle is overridden by the advanced scripting - the throttle delay makes the HUD throttle inoperable, for one thing.

i did some experimenting and I see why it happens. If you have the "Control Method" (the selector in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen when you go to the "Drive" menu) set to "Simple", the F4 HUD won't have a throttle control. You have to set the Control Method to Expert.

Ok, I went back and cleared the cache and now the whistle will work.

Unfortunately, the throttle control still doesn't appear. BTW I failed to mention in my original message that I use "simple controls".

mrennie I'll follow your lead and go do as you mentioned. *!!thnx!!*

Glad to hear it's working :D

I think once you've got to grips with the Consolidation, you'll never want to use simple controls again. What you can do is to use the expert control method but enable auto-fireman and use a HUD version of the loco. The HUD versions don't have quite as much functionality as the normal one (for example, in the HUD version, there's no throttle delay, you can't select the front and rear headlights independently, and a few other things I can't remember offhand ... but it's all in the manual), and to make up for the (expected) use of the auto-fireman (who fires very, very inefficiently), it has double the horsepower and starting tractive effort, so with the HUD version you should have no trouble getting up the hill to Cresson.

Have fun!
