Sorry is this is a really stupid question, but I'm stumped! What happened to the asset viewer? It used to be right next to the asset editor, but alas it is no longer there. Any help? !*don-know!*

Thanks!

Nathan.

I think this would be useful, I didn't know that there used to be such a thing in Railworks, when did they do away with it?

The asset viewer is accessible from the Train Simulator Utilities program.

To access utilities, navigate to the Railworks directory in your Steam folder. Click on "utilities.exe".

You will find the "Asset Editor" under the "Tools & Docs" tab.

I've placed a "utilities.exe" shortcut on my desktop to make it easier to access these tools.

I've never opened the asset editor before! When I did, this is what I saw after pinning the sliders open:

Where do I go from here? [By the way, that anonymous background blinks.]

The Asset Editor is for previewing scenery and rolling stock items that you have created yourself. These items will be in your source folder, and will have corresponding blueprints, etc. Unfortunately, you can't use it to preview the assets provided by RSC or created by others.

What we need is something along the lines of Paul Gausden's Shape File Viewer for MSTS. :D

You mean something like this?

Not ready for prime time yet .. but if it were released, how would it be useful?

Would it be able to see rolling stock, like while you are doing a repaint? That would be awesome.

Yes, if it can do rolling stock that'd be SUPER useful for content creators and repainters. MUCH faster than endlessly exiting / clearing cache / reloading the whole game!

I wonder if the new 'Asset Re-Loading' feature in TS2014 will help with this? ( see the last paragraph here: http://www.engine-driver.com/2013/09/new-developer-tools-for-ts2014-new.html )

Just a quick note if you are not aware of this, if you leave the game open to a scenario that has the item you are repainting, when you get your change re-loaded all you need to do is quit the senario and then say play again and it will load with the changes you just made. A lot quicker. Once in a while you'll get a SBBH and you will have to reload but not often.

Yes, thanks. I do that already, but occasionally a texture fails to load correctly when you do that. Auto-numbers also don't update in my experience. basically it is not foolproof.

I knew that sounded too good to be true. Why, after all, would RSC provide a viewer for their assets when they don't even know which assets are included in the DLC packs that they make and sell?

Wacampbell's asset viewer would be a huge help to me with reskins. I would be glad to help you beta test.
