Coupling instruction cannot be completed.

While testing out a scenario I've been working on earlier, everything went fine until I got to a coupling instruction I had set up. No matter what I did, I couldn't complete the instruction and continue with the scenario and I know I was doing it correctly. I went back into the editor to make sure I hadn't missed anything. All the cars were selected for the instruction and correct track was selected so I just can't figure out why it can't be completed.

It's a bit of a long shot, but did you check that the instruction is the adding to the front or back of the loco? Maybe you could take a screenshot of the instruction as seen in the timetable editor view and post it so we can have a better clue.

Check to make sure none of the cars are duplicated numbers. Not sure if this will cause a coupling problem but it will cause an uncoupling problem.

This happens to me also. The instruction is set up precisely as it should. Still, no luck. Same story as 3814.

This is probably another long shot, but I always put a waypoint instruction just before the coupling instruction, to stop in the same siding where I'm going to pick up or drop off cars.

Nope, that didn't work.

The only thing I can think of now is to delete that particular instruction and then put it in again. That has worked for me in the past.

Your screenshot shows a "warning triangle" error - if you click on that triangle it should bring up an error message - there's a strong possibility that there is one or more duplicated car number as Samwolf suggested above. Renumbering the affected cars (you may have to renumber both instances of the affected number) should resolve the issue (remember to update the coupling instruction with the new car numbers after renumbering!)
Hope this helps

But you can see the car numbers in the left hand side of the screenshot and none of them are duplicated. The warning triangle must be there from some earlier error (even when the error is resolved, the warning triangle stays there).

Hi - those cars listed in the box that is visible in the screenshot are only those that are required for the coupling instruction. If another car shares a number with one of these items - even if it is merely a static item sat on a siding somewhere - it can cause the coupling instruction to fail in my experience

Ah, good point! Thanks for the tip

I've noticed that in some of the scenarios included with the Western Lines of Scotland route, wagons in active use (coupled, uncoupled, or even just hauled) by the player engine have been assigned simple numbers in numerical order (1, 2, etc.). This is not "realistic" numbering, but it sure avoids duplicate wagon numbers, which do indeed cause errors that the editor does not always report.

I believe RW_Tools has a function for listing rolling stock with numbers.
