Check out other posts here in the forum on running steam engines. Sounds like you're not keeping your steam pressure up.

Or go into optoins and use simple controls first, then try more advanced controls with automatic fireman.

Have you kept up the fire and the water? Don't depend auto fireman. It doesn't do you any good.

Has anybody published a Cab-Forward Performance Mod like the ones for the BigBoy and the Challenger. These two mods really give you an edge with those beasts pulliing over the mountain passes.

IMHO, the AutoFireman is a Wimp. He is much too timid with the boiler feed. Just make sure you stop for fuel and water before you're in dire need of the consumables if you decide to fire the beast for yourself.

The Big Boy is good! !!*ok*!!

Challenger? Alot of wheelslips but I managed. Man am I dumb !**app*! !*roll-laugh*!, I've looked into 2 units and always thought the Challenger is the same 4-8-8-4 only smaller. When I test it on Donner Pass last week I was like... "Wait a min! That has 3 not 4. **!!bang!!**

Reason why we needed the performance because it wasted the steam so quickly the fireman was having a hard time trying to keep up with the steam pressure on Cajon Pass, even the GTrax Steam. I switched it to manual fireman trying to figure it out myself. nothin. I could not figure out what in the world I need to do to drive this steam engine. I love it so much but it's not giving what I wanted. So I stopped driving steam for like 8 months only to drive it on a flat grade feeling bad about the simualtor. Now with the performance its all good and the new HUD I can now enjoy driving steam and fell in love all over again. That's just me !*roll-laugh*!

The trick to drive that Cab Forward is to use the Coal and Water Icon. Also Blower! They perform great!

Did you know?
RSC did something about how Coal and Water Icon works? I looked over the driving manual and here's what I figure it out.

Steam Overlay how it works:
IN ORDER: (overlay On)

1st What works:
Cylinder ** "C"
Small Ejector "J"

Firebox Icon:
Firebox "F"
Rate Shovelling Coal "R" (high)

Water Icon:
On/Off Live Injector "I"
Flow to Live Injector "K"(high)

What doesn't work
Exhaust Injector "O"
Flow to Exhaust Injector "L"

2nd What works
Increase/Reduce On/Off Blower "N"
Increase/Reduce On/Off Damper "M"

I put these in order so it won't confuse me. The Water and the Coal both work together. Thats what you need to concetrate those to for the cabforward. Don't let the water go below 80% and the fire below 70%. Give it a try. The more you build up steam the more power you get. Also drop the Regulator and the Reverser to get more power if you need to on those climb.

I have found that at slow speeds, when pulling hard up the grade, the Reverser is your best friend. Don't be afraid to "Drop the Bar" all the way "into the corner", if you have to. You'll get more 'emuph' from each piston stroke. Its a balancing act, playing the throttle against the reverser, you know. Also, learning the proper use of the Fireman's controls, the blower and the injector and the stoker controls, has helped me alot.

Of Course Olpaint!

Reverse is always you best friend. !!*ok*!! I learned that years ago when I drove steam in rw2. Glad everything worked out for you. As soon as I get some money I'll be driving all American Steams in no time! Especially the Cab Forward. Work out more on the throttle and the reverser, they do help alot. Keep your eyes on that PSI too!
