Steam "verification"?

Unread postby OldProf » Sat Feb 23, 2013 3:21 pm

I just sent the following message to Steam (not RSC) support:

Lately, every time I boot up or restart my computer, a message box appears on the screen titled "Steam"; the message is, "Verifying installation ..."; the box also contains a progress bar and a "Cancel" button. The supposed "verification" takes approximately 3 to 4 minutes to complete.

Is this actually from Steam or is it a scam of some sort?

If it is authentic, what happens if it finds something that does not verify? Will Steam still work properly if I click the "Cancel" button before this supposed verification completes?

Lastly, why doesn't Steam inform its users of a new procedure such as this?

I'm also wondering whether anyone else is seeing this Steam verification box.

Amen! It essentially keeps me from using my computer while it is running.

By the way, this is the "instant reply" I received:

Thank you for contacting Valve. This email address is no longer monitored.

If you need customer service or technical support for Valve games or Steam, please go to the Valve Support Site at http://support.steampowered.com and submit a support incident.

So, I did that. The "Valve Support Site" is even more of an annoyance, as anyone who tried using it will see.

You may need to navigate to your \STEAM folder find clientregistry.blob rename to old then re-start STEAM and it should resove itself. It seems to have got into a loop and got its knickers in a twist!! https://support.steampowered.com/kb_art ... -EYON-2343
This fixed it for me.

I'm getting the Steam verification box with every Windows boot too. To the best of my memory it statrted about a week ago and I haven't taken the time to look into the cause of it yet. Now at least I know the problem is not isolated to something unique to my computer configuration. I'll let you know if I find a solution. !*hp*!

This seems to be the solution, Peter ... many thanks. I took the steps you suggested and then rebooted, which previously would have triggered another "verification" process, but did not.

Could solutions such as this be assembled by RWA monitors in a sticky thread that only they could add to? Otherwise, searching for them when a glitch like this occurs is practically impossible, since one has to guess at the correct search terms. Just an idea ... suggestion ... not demanding anything that implies work for anyone.

!!howdy!! !!jabber!!

I my case the solution that Peter posted did not work. I tried the procedure twice to make sure I was following the instructions properly. The way I solved the problem was by running the Steam install app. and selecting the repair option. That worked for me! No more verification window on system booting. !!*ok*!!
