I would reinstall the Steam client. First, tho, save your "steamapps" folder to a different spot on your hard drive. That folder has all your Steam games. If you have to, use an external USB drive. Don't use Steam backup, it don't work. Delete then reinstall the Steam client. Paste your "steamapps" folder back in, then you don't have to reload your games. I got a HUGE Steam update yesterday, but don't have any problems with my games. If it's only one game, try just verifying game files.
Oh, and make sure you have your Steam name and password at hand.
