RW3 random crashes to reboot

Unread postby gwgardner » Mon Feb 18, 2013 6:52 pm

Anyone else have an occasional catastrophic crash in RW3, as in not a CTD but a crash that actually reboots the computer? There isn't any particular pattern, although it does seem to be more likely to happen when I am editing and fiddling with gradients.

Reboots are often a sign of an overheating computer. Do you run any software that monitors the internal temperatures? If not, try OpenHardwareMonitor.

I think that if you're using Windows XP, a crash of the video driver will bring down the whole OS.
I know this doesn't happen with Windows 7, the driver just restarts.

What CPU are you running? I upgraded to an AMD Bulldozer 8 core, and several of my games would restart my PC. Went back to a Phenom II and all is well. I also use Core Temp as a monitor, and for my Nvidia card, I use Precision Tool to crank up the fan speed.

Thks for the comments. I run on an Intel i5, with Geforce 220 card. I'll check out the overheating.

I did do a cache check today, and it found 8 files to update - but those could all have been due to me using Krellnut's sound files I guess.

I'm with Bob. The only time I have ever had one shut off was when it got hot. It was the famous dust bunny mission and I had no monitoring device on my machine. RW is very intensive for the computer and it was ever going to find a time to get hot it would be here.

How old is the machine? Have you ever opened the case and blew out the dust?

About 1.5 years old. I'll check the dust.

Did a temp test just now, while in RW3 editor it maxed out at 86 degrees C on one of the processors. A brief look on the internet suggests that that is rather hot for an i5 750. So it appears that with my configuration, I am definitely stressing my processors to the max.

My temps are running as follows:
CPU 26C
Mainboard 36C
videocard 35C
HD 27C

Doing normal stuff.

Running RW
CPU 32C
Mainboard 47C
Videocard 69 C

For what it's worth.

I have reduced the temps while running RW3 by 10-15 degrees, by adding an outside fan. Guess I could do better with another internal fan. We'll see if that is the solution. Amazing that I still have temps 20 degrees higher than Buzz's - this is something for anyone getting a new system to pay attention to - don't skimp on fans if you intend to run Train Simulator 2013.

Check your airflow. You need to push out warm air from the top of the case, especially warm air from the CPU heatsink. Check that the airflow is not interrupted by flat cables, case structure, hard drives, etc.
I have 9 fans in my computer. I added two front fans on the front at the bottom, these force cool air in through a dust filter. Two big fans push warm air out the top at the back of the case.

Also you have to check whether your fans actually work. They tend to seize after a while, especially the cheap ones. This happened to me and I immediately had problems.
