Missing sounds

Unread postby mapitts » Wed Feb 13, 2013 7:09 pm

Maybe I need to start a new thread. After the update I have lost some sounds. I have recovered all of my custom sounds after spending all afternoon punching around. Now I have no horn at all on my Dash-9 and no alerter alarm in anything. I am in offline mode currently. Any thoughts or suggestions would be welcome. I am totally computer illeterate. Please be as detailed as you can be. I am beating my forehead against the wall.

First off, I would get back online and keep verifying files until it works. Then switch offline and add your customizations (did you see the link to the batch file solution?).

Yes, I read it but it did not make much sense to me. I also do not know how to verify files. That is why I think I am in so far over my head with this sim. I have also mangaged to get my custom sounds back. Will it delete them again if I go on line and verify files? I hae thought about going back online and see if I can reload the Dash 9 files, but I am afraid to. A pipe welder / fitter here with really little know how about computers. I will not make a move at all until I hear from you.

It was at the bottom of the link that was posted on my other thread. In BIG RED letters.

AH, well its not that complicated, and once its set up you don't have to adjust it.

To answer your question, yes some of your sounds will be overwritten if you verify local files. Same as when you get an update.
But you can't go on forever without doing it, that's why you need the batch file.

I suggest you enlist the help of a computer-savvy friend, he can read that post about the batch file and arrange everything for you.

The other choice is to simply make a list of what you need to reinstall after an update or a file verify. It helps to put all those install files and instructions in the same folder.

I am probably going to have to draft some help. Most of the times you all make it sound so easy. When I try to do it it turns south quick and I have nobody to turn to. It is kind of like this to me. I am a pipe fitter / welder by trade Things that are so simple for me are not for some of you. I can fit, tack, & weld out a 3" 45 quicker than most can with a fitter and a welder. They can send me and go and run a barometric leg from the 4th deck to the hot well. You have to know where you are tying in at, where you are going to have to make your deck penetrations, how many 45's you are going to need ( you cannot use a 90 in a baraometric leg ) and where you are going to end up. All you have is a tape measure, a level, and plumb bob. No drawing because you are making the drawing, what are you going to have to dodge to get it, how to do all of the math and take outs for the pipe, etc. What just rolls off of one persons tounge is a total mystry to some one else. I can only do extrememly basic things on a computer. I love this sim, although it is really more of a game than a sim. I simply did not know what I was getting into when I started this with RW. Sometimes I really am in way over my head with this. For example, yesterday was the first time in my life I have ever heard of a batch file. I do not know anyone close by who does this sim so there is no help there. I just lurk the posts hoping to find the answer to my problem at hand. I knew I blew a fuse the other day, and for that I apologize sincerely. I am just trying to put it in perspective of what is so very simple for one, barely makes sense to a novice. Hope this makes some sense. Thank you for your time.

As you said, one man's trade is another man's mystery. You lost me completely with your pipe fitting.
Remember, you can have fun with this sim in simple or complex ways, it is your choice. In order of simple to complex, you can:
1- just play the game without changing anything;
2- add some DLC from Steam;
3- add 3rd-party DLC;
4- start changing game files.

Right now you're already at level 4, so it is a little frustrating if you don't have the required skills.
You can choose to stay at levels 1-3 and avoid most of the trouble, or you can get help for the part you can't do yourself.
I can help you for the few items that are giving you problems, which are a few sounds that get overwritten.

Please tell me:
1- What exactly are the sound packs you had to reinstall after the update?
2- What is the path to your Railworks folder (usually something like C:\Program Files\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Railworks) ?
