Paint.net checkerboard on dds files?

I think the title explains it.
I used RSBinTool 0.9 to convert the NE repaint to a dds so I could try repainting it, and I get some sort of checkerboard over the file.

Why are you using Paint.net? CS2 is available.

CS2 doesn't support DDS files last time I used it.

This is partialy true. You need the NVidia plugin.
