A big mess

Unread postby 5292nate » Tue Dec 18, 2012 2:32 pm

I read about a big bug that was introduced into the TS2013 system with the Dec 3rd update. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/s ... ?t=3030241 Some people recommend re-installing TS2013. How do I do this without losing all the freeware/3rd party assets and repaints I've acquired scince I got RW? (That's a lot of items) Is saving the route files going to do it? Can someone provide me with a step-by-step tutorial on how to safely do this operation? Thanks,

Nathan

Are you actually getting any symptoms of the bug?

Bugger *!sad!* I haven't had any problems but judging by those forums it's pretty serious. All I can recommend is that from now on, you backup any extra (non-RSC) content with the same folder structure as the game ie. desktops\Assets\etc... etc... Every time you install something new, back it up, uncompressed into your backup folder... and make a note on notepad or something what it is. That way you can keep track of exactly what you've installed, and it's ready to drop into the game in a jiffy if you need to retore a backup.

Meanwhile, remember that xml files are easily edited with a text editor, and it is quite easy to remove the extraneous text added by this bug.

2 hrs spent re-installing the game. Nothing. Still can't get past this error.

Yeah. I have TONS of 3rd party assets that I use regularly, that a can't delete, and go find again. Some of the items are not even available anymore.

You can move them out of the way temporarily so that you can do a fresh, factory install of RW to eliminate them as a cause though right?

According to this recent post in the other thread:
Note that the usual "verify of local game cache" will not correct the problem if one of the truncated scenarioProperties.xml is not coming from Steam (one of your scenario, a workshop, a freeware, a 3rd party pack, ...).

Most likely your problem comes from a corrupted scenario file, from the same route where you recently edited a scenario. A good test would be to do as NDORFN suggests. Best way is to rename your "Railworks" folder and let Steam reinstall a clean copy without 3rd-party content.

I tried it. Still waiting for it to finish. What do I do if it works? Start adding them back one at a time?

That's a plan, but it would be quicker to go look for the usual suspects. I would start by looking at the most recently modified files in your old install. Also if you have recently modified scenarios, all scenario files for that route become suspect.

Hmmm, what about any freeroam scenarios I wish to do in the future, for any route, 3rd party, or, a Payware DLC, is there anything I need to look out for, or, be prepared against ??

Be prepared to do some time consuming .xml proofing, or just take a break from scenario creation until they've fixed it. Donner Pass update comes out tomorrow so you could always backup your pre-Dec 3rd version and go online... that should keep us all happy over Xmas.
