Is it just me?

Unread postby stresstool » Fri Dec 07, 2012 8:06 pm

I've had this problem for quite some time. RSC hasn't helped and it's been weeks since I reported it. I hadn't noticed anyone else mention it so am wondering if it is just me. When I start TS2013, most of the time I get this:

RailWorks 2012-12-07 16-44-40-72.jpg

If I wait a bit (sometimes just a few seconds, sometimes a minute [i.e. I wander off and do other stuff on other computers and come back to this screen]):

If I'm lucky, a new item will pop up once about every two or three or more seconds. One at a time:

If, after the first pix, I jump immediately into the MAIN MENU, it will die with a SBHH. If I wait for at least one item to pop up, I can go to MAIN MENU and continue without incident. Note, that all the items have always been present if I manage to get to the MAIN MENU without a SBHH. But sometimes it works with all the items showing up right away as, I imagine, should be normal. I thought it might be related to working after just booting the PC since that seemed to be when it worked right the most, but nope, that ain't it. It fails sometimes right after booting too.

Its internet connection speed. I sometimes have that problem if kids are playing online games and netflix is up and running.

I thought it might be that, however I have a 50MB/s line (for work and I work from home) so there isn't anything I can to do speed that up. It has to be something between RSC any my PC.

As an experiment, I set Steam in offline mode and disabled my network (unplugged the cable). The s/w should be smart enough to know there is no internet connection at all but maybe that's asking too much? It is different:

But it still don't work.

I was seeing that blank collection list but it cleared up for me a couple weeks ago after a RailWorks update.

I found that leaving it for a minute or two then clicking the "Main Menu" button would cause a SBHH failure but
the next RailWorks start quite often had the Collection populated.

I assume you are running in online mode otherwise you probably won't get the fix.

I had this problem some times in the past. And as you said, if you click on main menu before the collection screen if filled, you got a SBHH.

I correlated it with Steam very poor response time. In some periods, some Steam server can be really overloaded. It could also happen if your whole internet connexion is excessively poor (ISP trouble or other).

I only found 3 solutions:
- Be patient ....
- Switch Steam into off-line mode
- Change Steam server selecting another area of the world where activity is likely to be low (end of the night, morning). Latency is worse but usually bandwidth is better.

This is strange; there should be no need for the game to access Steam for displaying a menu.

I was just watching my net speed monitor and nothing was d/l while the pictures were filling in so I'm not sure what it's doing but it doesn't appear to have anything to do with Steam.
