FPS

This may have been answered elsewhere and I have searched. I was using MSI afterburner and HWinfo64 for monitor my GPU and CPU load as I was playing and I noticed that my CPU and GPU were using only around 50% load per which did not make any sense to me so I started rereading the hundreds if not thousands of posts around the web and noticed a very large number of high end, multi core systems with nice GPU's having problems with no real answers given. My first clue was upon starting another game (Red-faction Guerrilla) that afterburner told me I was using DX10 but that slot was empty on railworks, so I exited and had HWinfo show me the not just per core loads but the current MHz of each core and guess what? any game that popped up as a DX or OpenGL program the CPU would bump to 2.77GHz per core but in Railworks? 1.5Ghz. So I decided to see if forcing the power save feature to run 100% CPU at ALL times and my FPS went from 10-14fps to 30-35fps constant. Apparently Railworks 2012 does not kick the Power save feature off on all CPU's (I would assume that newer CPU's with more extreme save features would be more impacted) and if the CPU can't process Physx fast enough on the allocated core the core that is controlling the GPU cant send instructions fast enough and hence the GPU cant render the frames at a decent rate. also seems to me to indicate why the CPU and GPU show low overall usage, kind of a domino affect.
Most of this is just conjecture and wild guesses on my part but one thing I do know is that my CORE I7 920 and GTX 260, 216core, 896mb were not getting full use until I set manual CPU power save off. now core #1 shows 90-100% use at all times and the rest of the cores fluctuate between 30-40% with the GPU at around 60%

If this has been said and discussed before mods please delete but I wished to share a possible solution that I have yet to read about and I have read HUGE numbers of posts on performance problems of good equipment since purchasing this sim at the time the BIGBOY was released.

Go to control panel, Hardware and sound, Power options, select High performance and then change plan, change advanced, processor power, and set minimum to 100% and check that maximum is at 100% also. you should also set cooling to active or it will slow the CPU to keep the PC quiet. on different OS it may not have this problem but on my Win7 it did.

I for one don't recall the solution you are providing, maybe because only couple months ago I updated my rig, so now is worth an attempt to tweak the performance. For sure TS2013 will require even more powerfull rigs.

Thank you, !!*ok*!!
Doc.

Hi BigB700 hmm.. I always set the power options to high performance. I dont recall being able to tweak the processor power though. Will have to take a look at this when i get back home.

I've not had time to run railworks but I had a quick look at the processor power setting and it was set to min 5% and max 50%! I've set them both too 100% now and I'll see how I get on later.
One thing I couldn't find with vista was how to change the cooling set up. Does anyone know how?

Hi guy's,
A couple weeks ago,I found a small app. called Unpark cpu. It's for core i5's and i7's.and sets all cores to 100%. It's free, and requires no install.
I'm running a i5,with a gts360mon a laptop,and at the moment,TS2012 looks awesome.
Give it a try.

I couldn't find the cooling option either.

I'm running windows 7 and an I3 core.

Perhaps the cooling option is only on systems with an adjustable fan.

Has anyone tried it with success?

Metropolitan Edison tried it in 1979 at Three-Mile Island, but not with success.

LOL!

It is in the advanced power options.
The same place you adjusted min and max cpu

Well... just checked, my system was already tweaked as BigB700 suggested... supposedly by default, once the rig is quite new and I never changed that before. Anyway, thank you BigB700 !*salute*!

Mine too! How disappointing.

For the record... As I said mine was already set to "max performance" (100% min, Fan active, 100% max). Then, out of curiosity, I tweaked down to "balanced" and my fps dropped a bit: from 90 to 75 in a certain scenario. No reason for disappointment eh? !*roll-laugh*! Most important is that this means that BigB suggestion makes the trick indeed, if the case. BTW I have a desktop. I've just recalled that Chris (from Arizona) had suggested this tip for laptops sometime ago.

Mine doesn't have the option there *!sad!*
I'm running an old AMD triple core with vista.
I did a couple of tests last night. On the WCML I didn't see any improvement at all but I think it's more my rig than uprating.
With a run on the Oxford Paddington line I did notice an improvement by about 5fps.
If I get a chance today I'll run the NEC as that was another killer route for me although with the AmCan light mod has been running better.

So far, so good, but where do I find "advanced power options"?

Thanks
