Adding routes/stock without .rwp file

Unread postby jason41984 » Sun Jul 22, 2012 5:29 pm

I'm new to this forum, and couldn't really find a thread that would answer my question. I'm attempting to install a few 3rd party addons, but there are no ".rwp" or ".rpk" files in the folders I have downloaded. Would it work if I were to just copy each folder, e.g.; "Assets" "Content" to the respective folder in my "C:/Railsimulator..." folder? A few had ".rwp" files, but the others are just folders with .xml files and others.

*&!welcome!&* aboard.... Jason.

If it has not the rwp, then in 99.99% of cases will have RW_AssetSetup.exe or (RW_RouteSetup.exe), just run it and be sure to make the path to match your game's path. Did you read the Readme.txt (or whatever, like install.txt) that always come with asset's pack? *!twisted!* I never saw, so far, a Readme without install instructions.... there is always the installation procedures to the pack. Some requires manual copy and paste operations, but especially in this case is always stated in the Readme the "how-to-do". *!!wink!!*

Doc, aren't .xml files just the read me files?

Jason, first, *&!welcome!&* Then, where did you get these third part files from? Railworks likes to load .rwp files with Package Manager, and some other providers use a .exe to install. But some repaints can be very, very different and difficult to install. Like Doc said, read the read me files on how to install. Be patient, if you are a noob, it will take a while. Ask any more questions you want, lots of folks here to help.

Nope, anyway.... the .xml files are within the subfolders \Assets and \Content, they are scripted codes files to run the game, nothing to do with install instructions. However... yes, you can read a .xml file double clicking on it (will open IE), or open the .xml with Notepad, check and see the difference of the content. *!!wink!!*

I have three folders in each main "route" folder: Content, Assets, and Manual(s). Is there a way to take these files and turn them into a .rwp or .rpk file to be able to install them? !**conf**! Anyone can feel free to e-mail me or PM me a detailed list if they have one written out, or know where to find one online.

The Manual folder usually holds the Manual with install instructions. But above these folders there are the pack folder (with the pack name) and within the readme or install.txt.

You can also install it manually, as you said in your first post, copying the 3 folder you mentioned into the \railworks folder. *!!wink!!*

Maybe this will help, further, when you become a bit more familiar to the game:
Reinstall RW3 Mods with 2-Clickz (Basic)
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5383

And last but not least.. which is (are) exactly the add-on pack(s) you are trying to install, and where you downloaded it (them) from ?

Cheers,
Doc.

Doc,

I got my routes from torrent sites. Not sure if this would be the cause of my eternal frustration. I was also toying with the idea of changing some of the 7zip, zip, rar, file extension names to .rwp, and see where that leads me. I'll make backups of everything before I go traipsing into the unknown

Torrent? *!rolleyes!* piracy huh? *!twisted!* if so... very bad, sorry to say... !!**sorry**!! and this explains why you don't have any readme, you are getting the route folder itself (now I realised what you meant by "route" folder").

You can turn rwp into zip, but not zip into rwp, it's doesn't work, was already tested and discussed anywhere here on RWA.

I do have the hard copy of TS2012 though. I have no desire to use Steam at all, so I just ignore it. I will be definitely buying the routes and installing them the right way from now on. I just found the thread about changing the file extension names. Going to delete the downloaded junk I got and live with what I have til I can afford to buy more routes.

A good engineer is patient and follow rules... Whether you are new on RW3 you have a lot of default routes, tons of assets and (RSC states) 60 scenarios to keep you busy down the track for a long while, before starting to have headaches installing add-ons and such! Starting notch by notch is always a good advise.

Have fun!

Many thanks Doc! *!!thnx!!* Once I'm feeling more adventurous, I might model a few routes to mirror the trains that run through my area. Already found some good repaints of the stock US diesel loco online! !*YAAA*!

Jason, be warned, we frown on this very much here. We all believe that route, scenario, engine and rolling stock creators should be compensated, unless it's free ware. If you downloaded free ware, I apologize for my presumptions. There are a lot of sites that have free ware downloads, once you have purchased the base sim.

How can you ignore Steam if you have a legitimate copy of TS-2012?

I've been having an issue (like many others) in getting the UK LED signals to work. I tried the one that I got from steam, but it's not seeming to work. And all the downloads I've been getting are from 3rd party creators of their own maps/scenarios.
