Highlighting Lofted objects

I am not really computer savvy but have been enjoying creating railways for a couple years now. Recently, the highlighting tool for the transform gizmo won't latch onto lofted objects; ie: fences, walls, and, to my consternation, tracks. The gizmo appears with a left click anywhere but moves with the camera and has no effect. I like alot of details and wonder if perhaps I am overloaded or something, but I don't know where to find that info. Also, if I leave the computer for a bit, the scene locks up and I can't reach it with the task manager. I have to shut the CPU off manually. This gives me a message that Steam is open and preventing a proper shutdown. I went to Steam and tried accessing their support screen but received a message that those pages fail to respond. Yikes! Can somebody give me a starting point?
