Challenger Disaster

Unread postby lorenzoj » Fri Aug 12, 2011 6:55 am

I just got the GTrak Berkshires direct from GTrak cause they were used in a several scenarios on the C&O Alleghany route. Beautiful model to look at in motion. A couple scenarios utilize the Challenger pak from Steam DLC. Got and let Steam install that. Shows up in the Package Manager list and also in the Scenarios and Routes lists in the game. Trying to play any scenario on any route featuring the Challenger results in a system crash while loading.( The dreaded " Something bad happened....message" ) Trying to use the Berkshire scenarios which include the Challenger result in a "Can't load/find"error and the Edit or Exit menu. Inspecting the scenarios with RW Tools shows nothing missing. I'm really stuck here. Should I uninstall the Challenger pak. Will Steam automatically re-install for me if I select it on the DLC as I already bought it. Help

You bought a license to use it rather than buying some files, so now it's always there for you no matter how many times you have to reinstall. Try verifying cache first, it might not all have downloaded.

Click on the Steam icon, choose Libraries. Right click on Railworks> Properties> Local Files tab> Verify. You may have to do that a few times until no missing files are found. If that doesn't work, redownload and install the Berkies. They work fine for me.

Thanks, but I found the way on my own after much effort. Many of us are new to Steam / Railworks and as important as those functions seem to be, they are not easy to find for newbies. I was doing everything except right clicking on the game name in my Steam Library. You would think you could get there via the Tools menu when you start up, like where the "clear cache" button is. Or at least have a note there with instructions for getting to the Verify function. I really have been lucky so far I guess with my lack of problems.

There was one other big one. I installed the Moscow - Camden etc route and my Railworks Installation became so unstable my entire system went black screen and total shutdown every couple minutes no matter what route / scenario I ran. Very scary. Uninstalled Moscow route and all was ok again. Would that have been a situation that would have been addressed by the "Verify...." routine

I don't have Moscow to Camden, so I don't know if it's a third party (independent creator) route or not, but a third party route usually can't be fixed by the "verify" trick. Only what you get thru Steam.

What about routes and assets that are available either through steam or directly from the originator ? In any case getting the Berkshire and Challenger scenarios working was great. Thanks.

It's in the library here. It was done by Michael (GreatNortherner) Stephen. *!!wink!!*

There's a actually two versions. A modern version and a 1920's version.

I could be wrong (I have been before) but as I said, only the "stuff" you get thru Steam can be verified by their system. If you got it someplace else and have issues, usually contacting the developer, or just uninstall and reinstall.

The modern one found here inc the patch file were the Camden route I installed. The above problem persisted till I uninstalled the route. Stability fine since. Going to try the 1920's Route just for yucks maybe. I do like the period stuff at Golden.
