Transferring RW folder to new computer

Unread postby Shortliner » Mon Jul 25, 2011 2:28 pm

So, I ordered a new computer, a HP Quad Core with 1T of HD and 6GB of RAM. So I'm wondering how hard it'll be to transfer my RW files to the new machine. I'm asking that is because of Steam. I know RSC uses steam to verify that you have a legit copy of RW, and I'm wondering if my current RW/Steam account is forever connected to my (soon to be old) computer. I have alot of freeware and payware (not always DLC from steam) content I'd rather not lose. Plus my route project.

Thoughts?

Just copy your entire Steam folder to the new PC; no complications. You can even put it in a different location if you want... just make a shortcut to the "Steam.exe" file on your desktop. When you first fire it up on the new machine and login to Steam, it will prompt you to check your email for an verification code which you paste into a dialog box and off ya go. The login security thing is fairly recent I think and is probably enabled by default, though it can be turned off in the Steam settings.

Now, I'm intersted. What graphics card do you have in there?

I already thought of upgrading mine with a MSI Nvidia 560GTX-Ti Twin Fozr.

This is the machine I ordered. It has an ATI card. I'll probably replace it with an GeForce card. Mostly because I just like the GeForce brand.

That ATI 4200 card is weak. The GTX560Ti is a very nice card. I have the GXT470 and it's fine. Can't get them any more tho. Make sure you get the EVGA Precision Tool so you can monitor card temp and change the fan speed. http://majorgeeks.com/EVGA_Precision_d6209.html

As far as what to copy to the new machine, why not just put your old hard drive in it? You can drag and drop all the files, folders and games you want right into your new system. But, what you need is the "steamapps" folder, and your Documents folder. Once Steam is reinstalled, just paste that "steamapps" folder back over. Voila.

whoa... EVGA precision tool... That crashes my RW ever since I updated my Win 7 to SP1. I've tried everything to get it to work, whats your secret?

Wow, really? No secret, it just runs in the background all the time. Never had an issue with it and any game. Could be the amount of RAM in your system. It doesn't use a lot of resources, but it does use some. Do you have the newest version?

I run my PC's (all 4 of them) 24/7, running Folding @ Home, which runs the video card at 100%, so I need to up the fan speed to keep them cool. Default factory settings may be OK for most users, but not for me. I would have fried all my cards a long time ago. And it does work with any Nvidia card, doesn't need to be an EVGA card. Not sure what ATI uses these days. Used to be ATI Tray Tools, but I think that's gone.

All it has to do is sit in the tray on defaults, start up RW and watch it crash. No other game does it.

Once you set the fan speed to what you want it at, right click on the icon and exit. Fan speed will remain at what you set it at. I never have the icon in the tool tray.
