When I select a building from my list, I select it from the list and point to the place to put it and click the left button. The structure is placed in red, and a second structure pops up (not in red) with it at a stewed angle. I have never had that happen before. Also, when trying to install a signal or a track action asset, such as a coal tower or fuel point, usually a lineup or action trigger gizmo appears on the adjacent track for positioning. When I try it now I just get a second signal, not a gizmo. Can anyone come suggest a fix? I should add that lately I have had trouble with my machine.

You may have the auto-rotate, auto-scale, or auto-offset enabled. Uncheck those settings in the Option box in the lower left of the editor screen.
