Using Krellnut Sounds with a Caboose "Passenger View"

Unread postby ChrisOnline » Sun Dec 09, 2018 2:53 pm

This has bugged me for a while, and I have not worked out why it happens or how to fix it.

I love Krellnut wagon sounds, and have added them to all US freight. They also work well on some UK-based freight.

However I have found that with a caboose (or UK brake van) with its own camera view (I will call it the Passenger View) and with Krellnut Sounds installed, all wagon sounds from not only the caboose, but any other Krellnut-fitted wagons in the train (often the whole train) disappear WHEN USING THE PASSENGER VIEW. The railjoint sounds (through bogieaudiocontrol) remain, and you can still hear the engine sound and horn/whistle from the loco at the front of the train. But a complete silence (like you're underwater) from any aspect of wagon rumble, axle sounds, rattles etc . . i.e. the sounds emanating from the wagonsound.proxyxml, using Krellnut sounds.

Everything is fine if you use the normal exterior view (F3) to view the train from the back - all sounds are good. But move to the caboose's Passenger View, and the sound disappears as described above, like you're sitting in a cocoon!

I can't see any form of occlusion or masking in Krellnut sounds, and there are a couple of UK-based wagon audio products, from Armstrong Powerhouse and Steam Sounds Supreme, which DO NOT have this problem with the brake van view

Hopefully I have explained clearly - try it for yourself if you have Krellnut sounds

Any ideas why? And ideas for a fix?

How about copying the lines from the Kuju bin file for the wagon sounds to whatever it is that has silence?

The caboose's .bin file has the child object Wagon Sound (or similar file name) . . . sometimes that points to the Kuju Audio folder, or often to an Audio folder within the same product folder. Either way, the appropriate wagonsound.proxyxml (or similar) then points to WJSounds (i.e. the Krellnut Sounds folder)

And those Krellnut sounds work fine - beautiful rumbles, scrapes and whines. So the function itself is fine. And if Krellnut sounds are NOT involved anywhere, the internal camera settings (for the "passenger view" from the caboose) give the view from the caboose without affecting the sounds from either the caboose or the rest of the train.

So it seems that the coding within Krellnut Sounds is creating some sort of masking/occlusion when the camera view is being used, but I see no evidence of it in the files, and I have gone through all of them!

I have tried cloning chunks of code and switching between alternatives, all to no avail

I was hoping thast someone might have looked into this, or might have an idea what is causing it.

Without digging to deep I'm guessing the reason for the silence when inside the caboose is because all the wagon sounds are set for outside only. Sounds can be set for; inside, outside or both.
One could change the sounds to both. Done in the XML. If set to both however, if you ride in loco cab all the time, the wagon sounds in the cab will be as loud as they are outside. That's why I set them for outside only. I did not make wagon sounds for inside use.
In a caboose one would hear wagon sounds, but in the locomotive; not with the engine running. The game doesn't differentiate between the two.

One could avoid the above issue by using a occlusion blueprint, but my attempts at doing so for the SD40-2s has been goofy at best. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

Hi Walter, thanks so much for your response . . . from the horse's mouth! Your comments have confirmed my thoughts, and clarified where I should be looking.

By changing the 30-something occurrences in the proxyxml file of:
<PlayState d:type="cDeltaString">OUTSIDE</PlayState> . . . to . . . <PlayState d:type="cDeltaString">BOTH</PlayState>
I have success!! I now have your great freights sounds throughout the train INCLUDING when using any caboose or brake van "passenger view".

To be honest I don't have any problem with the sounds from inside the loco cab . . . it is barely noticeable, and an effective cab occlusion (which admittedly doesn't come with every loco) seems to complete the job of avoiding the wagon sounds being too loud. So on balance I prefer the revised setup using "BOTH" as the setting in the proxyxml, as I do like dropping into the caboose and watching from the back of the train, with those freight sounds enhancing the experience!

Many thanks again, you have resolved something that has been bugging me for a while
