Well, not sure if this should go here or over on Geek Speak...

I'm doing a MILW route from Plummer ID to Dear Lodge MT. (Yes, I am aware someone else is making a route of this area, I want to build my own)

Everything was going great until I hit the East end of the yard in St. Maries ID.

After that, the sim kept crashing as I was adjusting the grade to go over the river just East of St. Maries heading to Avery

Enclosed is the error message I get when the darn thing crashes to the desktop. I really have no idea what's causing it, let alone how to fix it.... SOS!!! Please help!!!

This is a fairly common problem. As the error message says, you are 'E_OUTOFMEMORY' ( Out of Memory )

It seems the process of doing elevation adjustments uses a lot of ram. Each click and drag on an elevation handle adds to the memory consumed by Railworks. When you run out of 32 bit memory, the program crashes.

Here's a couple of suggestions:

First, split up your track while you are doing elevation adjustments. Just use the Split tool in your Linear Object Toolbox to isolate the track section. Then periodically save and exit back to the main menu to clear the memory. You can weld it all back together when you your elevation work is done.

Second, monitor your memory use in Task Manager while you work on your track:
- hold your Windows Key ( Start Key ) and click R to open the Run box
- type in taskmgr and press enter.
- open Railworks in a windowed mode
- adjust the window locations so you can see the Task Manager memory consumption while you work
When you approach 3,200 MB used, its time to save and exit back to main menu!

PS - one final tip. After you save and exit, its a pain to navigate back to where you are working. So my process is to click the DRIVE button, Save Changes, F2, Save Progress, Escape, Quit. Now you can use Resume to get back to the correct location, and Ctrl-E to renter the editor.

Thanks. So it's a sim thing. I was a bit worried I had something bad brewing with my computer though even else does work. I do break my track when I have to adjust the height as a rule. Learned the hard way when I started out what happens if you don't do this. The track crawls more than one wishes. I credit Otto (RIP) for pointing that out to me.

When I save and exit, what I do is write down the longitude and latitude of where I last worked. When I make my backups as I work, part of the file name for the backup includes the longitude/latitude.

I have experienced this error on occasion but not as much as I have in the spot just East of St. Maries. What I didn't know was what caused the crash and burn.

I had this problem also.
This error message pops up every time when I place any trainset.
The error was making a lot of textures in 4096x4096 which have been solved out now by making 2048x2048.

Kman, I have found that adjusting the elevation of the 'end arrow' at the end of your track ribbon doesn't seem to cause the out of memory error. Its when I go back down the track ribbon that this error seems to be most likely.


I'm glad to hear about this route project! That line is an incredible feat of engineering. If you don't have one already, I have a 1976 MILW track chart for the Montana Division showing very detailed gradient profiles, and lineside items list. Let me know if you would like a copy.
