Installing New Sounds Problem

I would start by confirming that the new sound files installed in the correct directory. Do both you have the same version of the P42 (RSC or GTrax)? I would also ask if your friend has installed any other mods to his P42. If this sound pack just replaces existing sound files, but his .proxybin files in the Audio folder have been modified and are pointing to different sound files, then that could explain the difference in sounds. Also, one thing I always do after installing a mod is to clear the game cache (Settings -> Tools -> Clear Cache).
