DEM

Unread postby bnsf9580 » Wed Aug 19, 2015 11:55 pm

So huge shout out to the creators of the Racetrack route- I love it. I live about 60 miles west of Aurora on the track that ends just south of the station in Aurora on the route. Known as the Aurora Sub (appropriately), it stretches from Aurora all the way past Savanna, IL on the Mississippi River, and I believe it is technically still the Aurora Sub all the to Prairie Du Chien. Anyways, I'm trying to extend the route to create this subdivision. I struggle with terrain, as I don't know many places well enough east of Rochelle to try and eyeball the terrain. So, as suggested by barnez, I learned how to use DEM and attempted to import terrain data, and it has worked pretty well so far. At least to a certain point. I followed the guide here: http://www14.zippyshare.com/v/65620703/file.html and skipped almost everything because the files, which I grabbed from here: http://dds.cr.usgs.gov/srtm/version1/United_States_1arcsec/1arcsec/, were already in the .hgt format, so I didn't have to convert anything at all. So I created the DEM/SRTM folder and copied the .hgt files into that folder. Opened the route, clicked the Import data button, and selected SRTM and it worked right there at W. Aurora. So I got excited and moved on. Sugar Grove, Big Rock, Hinckley, Waterman, Shabbonna, all worked. But, then I got further west, and suddenly it was flat again. So I loaded in the data, and my game crashed. And I tried again with similar results. And again. So I tried another lat/long block that I downloaded the .hgt files for. Crashed again too. So I don't know what the deal is, why it worked one time and not the other. I did find though that it seems to be the longitude line of -89 where it crashes. You can see in this picture that line. Pretty clearly too.

So again, I'm not sure why it worked once and not again in a different spot. I re-downloaded the files and installed them again and it yields the same results. Here are the settings the Importer is set to and worked when I used it the first few times. Very confused.

Hopefully someone can find what I'm doing wrong and help me solve this issue! Tired of boring flatness in my routes. Hopefully I can get some realistic grades where they belong so I can run realistically on my home rails! Because this train should be bottoming out in a valley right hear and the top of a hill should be next to those elevators!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
*!!thnx!!*

You'll need to fill gaps using SRTM data:

Well I followed the link, and I ended up getting to the same place I was before. I downloaded the ones I needed (and replaced the ones I already had, which I did have all the ones I needed from the first time) and I copied them into the SRTM folder, ran the game, opened the importer, went to my location, and imported the data and poof! Nothing happened... So I'm not quite sure what else to do...
*!sad!*
On another note, the region guide on the link you sent was fascinating. Took me quite some time to realize the white was the oceans and not land. It was at that moment that I realized I need serious help!

SRTM data is offset, so you might need surrounding areas. Since the files are small, you could opt to download the entire bunch to your DEM\SRTM folder for this and future projects. I have, and when I find a tile gap I simply fill it in.
Cheers!

But isn't the files that I downloaded entire sections to the whole lat/long degree? If so, I don't know what to "fill in" with, since all the data SHOULD be there with those files. Unless I have to go to an entirely different source, which I guess is possible but I don't know what would have something ready to use.

It appears that alot of the 1 arc/second DEM data floating around the net is subpar, or gives issues. I've downloaded all of my filler DEM from the USGS national map viewer. I wrote a quasi tutorial on how to get the files from it in this thread: -> viewtopic.php?f=7&t=14076

I would suggest giving that a try.

I followed that thread and reach a point where BILxSRTM doesn't convert anything.
Also checked out this post -> viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10921
I followed the tutorial exactly, and I open BILxSRTM and find the path to the files and click start and I get "Looking for BIL Data" and "Done" to pop up. Nothing in between, and no .hgt files either. I did download the USGS .hgt files from two various places and neither seemed to work properly. I get to a certain point and it drops off. I try to import and my game crashes.
