Stuttering - How Can This Be Minimized?

I've tried various settings in TS2015 and NVIDIA Control Panel, but I still get too much stuttering. !*not-ok*!

Here's my setup:

Dell Inspiron 660

Intel Core i3 3240 Ivy Bridge, Socket 1155

8 GB DDR3 RAM

Velociraptor 10,000 RPM HDD

EVGA GTX 750TI 2 GB GDDR5 128 Bit interface. This is connected to a 21" Samsung Monitor via DVI-D Dual Link. I run the game at 1920 x 1080.

I can update to a Core i5, but it costs $200 despite being an old chip.

What does a person need to make this game work? It seems a Core i7 with a GTX 980 might do the trick, but maybe not. !*hp*!

An i5 should be better than the i3. From what I have read going to an i7 is not that great advantage over an i5 as the game engine in TS2015 is pretty old. I'm using an i5 quad core with no problems.

I have a i3 and a i5 the i3 with a 2gig 750to boost and it runs with no stuttering except when loading a new tile. Play with your settings. Your rig should run TS2015 just fine.

I'll second that. You may not be able to run full HD with all sliders maxed, but especially modifying the AA and Anisotropy settings can have great impact on how the game runs.

Also, maybe it isn't stuttering that you're seeing, but more an issue of an unsteady frame rate. A steady frame rate of 30 appears much smoother to one's eye than a frame rate that is higher, but frequently jumps all over the place. You might try adding the frame rate limit command line switches and see if that improves the visual experience.

To add a command line switch:
- right click on TS2015 in your Steam Library, select "Properties"
- on the "General" tab, press the "Set Launch Options..." button
- enter "-FPSLimit=30" (without the quotes). Possible values are 30 and 60. Use a setting that is below the frame rate you usually get, so if you're typically below 60 fps in the sim, use 30 for the command line).

Cheers
Michael

Michael:

I believe you're correct about the "stuttering" actually being an unsteady frame rate. !!*ok*!!

This is what I have in the command line: -SkipIntros -Multicore -EnableAsyncKeys -FPSLimit=30

Is the command line setup correct? I believe there should be a space before each item, then a dash.

I know there's some disagreement about whether TS2015 can use multicore, but I have a switch there anyway. !*don-know!*

Thanks!

I presume spending $200 for an i5 "upgrade" isn't worth it?

This is what I have:

--enable-backups -FPSLimit=30 EnableAsyncKeys -SkipIntros -followaitrain
Not sure how strictly RW is with the dashes, I assume not too much if EnableAsyncKeys works with and without dash. I remember seeing a complete list of all the switches somewhere, but not where precisely. :(

EDIT: found the list:

I suggest you mess with this first. Like I said my 3 works just fine. My other rig has a SSD and 16 gigs of ram so it's hard to compare but we have a ton of scenery on the Lafayette Route and it runs fine for me. I wish I could give you more specifics but that computer is in Florida and we are pretty much back in N. Illinois for the Summer so I can't give you exact settings.

Do some of this and set that frame rate and post back.

How do you know when a new tile is loading? !*don-know!*

If it's just going smoothly and then you get a momentary stutter then it goes smooth again.

Here's what I found worked best:

1) Limited Frame Rate to 30

2) In TS graphics settings, I used the following settings:

Dynamic Clouds - Off

FXAA + 4 X MSAA

Anisotropic x 4

Shadow Quality - Off

View Distance - Full On

3) In Nvidia Control Panel, I used the following settings:

AA Gamma Correction - On

Shader Cache - On

Texture Filtering - On

Vertical Sync - On

If anybody has further suggestions/modifications, feel free to let us know.

Try putting the DSR setting onto 4. It is under the global tag.
