Yeah...I use the Xbox 360 controller since I get mixed results with my Raildriver in this sim. The trick with the Xbox controller is to do very quick and brief taps of the triggers and bumpers to hit each of the throttle notch points more accurately. Same with brakes (which aren't notched). Takes a little practice but you'll get the hang of it.
I always keep my mouse active just for the things that are tedious with the controller like uncoupling cars. Navigating the menus with TS2014 was pretty easy with a controller. It's a royal pain in the butt with the new TS2015 menus, so the mouse comes in handy here.
Basic rule of thumb... if it's very hard or impossible to do with the controller, use the mouse or keyboard to manipulate those functions. I mainly use the controller for throttle, brakes, switching camera views and manipulating the free roam camera. I do most everything else with the mouse and keyboard.
