Skins won't show on GP7

Unread postby HankySpanky » Wed Jan 08, 2014 3:58 pm

I downloaded some skins from Digi-Rails and had an issue so I posted this in their site and didn't get any help (or readers for that matter). So I am reposting it here - at the best dern rail site this side of the equator.

For some reason the GP7 skins don't show. They are in the DRB_Simstuff folder via the RW_AssetSetup.exe.

When I go to put the locos in a scenario, I keep getting the original (default?) SEABOARD skin. I have tried the B&O and CR downloads, and there is no difference. I viewed some of the files in the texture folder, and they show the proper skin (ie: B&O_5625\Engine\Textures\GP7_Body_nm.TgPcDx).

I cleared the cache and even ran the DELETE-PAK.BAT utility. No change. Not sure what the problem is. Both the default and newly downloaded folders appear to have the same number of files and identical file names.

I don't know how to interpret GeoPcDx or lua files, but they are the same names, respectively, as in the default GP7\Engine folder. Is this the problem?

Can someone steer me in the right direction?

Which GP7s are you trying to download? Some work for me, others don't.

B&O (Chessie) and CR (Conrail). What worked for you? I will try it and let you know.

Yes - the NYC repaints work.

After digging around, I sort of found what the problem is. There are two different texture formats included with the downloads. One type is COLA8888 (nm for short) and COMPRESSED_EXPL_ALPHA (nmc for short). The nm files have the correct skins where the nmc files have the Seaboard skins. It is possible to rename the nmc skin to "REM - nmc" and rename the nm skin to "nmc". This works but is probably a TOTAL HACK JOB and not the way to resolve it.

Apparently there is another file somewhere that points to the nm file and needs to be changed to point to the nmc file instead. At least that's the way I am seeing this problem. Either that or Railworks uses the nmc format and these skins were made for a different player? I don't really know anything about this stuff and hopefully a pro reading this can tell us how to fix this so I don't have to resort to the hack job mentioned above.

Thanks in advance for some expertise here... **!!bow!!**

Where did you find the GP7 on Digirails? I can find a 9 but not the seven.

AH! Finally someone else has the same problem! Misery loves company! !*cheers*!

Seriously, here's how I fixed it, but not sure it is the right way.

In your repaint engine's Texture folder (RailWorks\Assets\DRB_SimStuff\NA\RailVehicles\Diesel\GP7Repaint 1234\Engine\Texture) there are four files where the name ends in _nmc. There are also four files that end in _nm.

Delete the _nmc files and then rename the _nm files to _nmc.

The program is opening the _nmc files, and the original download has the SEABOARD skin in the _nmc and the skin you want in the _nm.

The problem is caused by a version difference. The early v1 used the nm/nmc pair based on distance, using the non-compressed file for close in, and to save CPU/GPU stress, the compressed ones for distance viewing. When Mr. Brindley redid his fine locos for RW2(?) he did away with the back and forth swap and only used the nmc files.

This caused us repainters a lot of headaches. I updated all of the older versions, and added the TS3 light beams, removed the old ground shadow, and the fakey light fan. Nearly all of the versions are here in the file library on RWA. Search by my username.

If you have reskins that are not in my list of work, let me know by PM and I'll fix them for you.

Thank you MadMike, I'll have to look for that but i was able to get some working by deleting the mnc and renaming the nm files to nmc, I'm guessing the mnc files were the Seaboard textures that the were installed with your repaint when you run the RW asset setup
