WCML

Unread postby alouette2 » Thu Dec 08, 2011 9:15 pm

Hello,

I have a problem that I hope someone can help me with. In the WCML, Every time I run the Class 86 Intercity Executive It starts out ok but then the amps go to zero and the train slows down and stops. And when it stops I cannot get it to go again. Maybe I just don't know how to drive it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

There's a special technique to driving the Class86. Never worked it out myself but there is plenty of information and vids out there.

In the RailWorks Manuals there are instructions for the Class 86 which points out all the controls you can interact with as well as describing the Tap controller.

The key to controlling this loco is learning how to tap and things that can affect tap action. Low Frame rates probably inpact it the most. Another item that can improve the action is disabling the F4 Heads Up Display (press F4). Yes, it can be a tough loco to control but once you get the hang of it, it is fast and powerful - listen for the wind noise once you get above 80 or 90 MPH...

If you're not aware, there are manuals for most installed items. Look for the Manuals directory in the railworks directory.

There was a patch to convert the controls to a normal notched throttle around somewhere. I think it was on UKTrain-Sim.

Just turning it into a notched regulator without doing anything else will unfortunately just destroy it's performance too - it's well worth the small effort learning how to drive it properly.

Once you learn how to drive it (which should only take about 5 minutes A little longer to perfect it) and you will wish all trains drove this way

I watched that YouTube video about the class 86 and could see the operator moving the various controls but did not have a clue as to what he was doing since there was no narration.

I think that I have gotten it figured out, thanks for the suggestions. I just now need to pay attention to the alerter since that got me twice.

The Class 86 is a joy to drive. I was confused at first also. But once I got the hang of it it was a piece of cake. One of my favorite loco's in the game.

The alerter? I think you're talking about the AWS horn - which needs cancelling - which is to warn you the next signal is anything except green. Yes, do pay attention to that :)

Lots of electics used tap-changers, I'd not be too surprised if a bunch of US ones would need to be driven the same way. Although I guess a lot of them would automatically run up & down like tube trains or DaveB's EMUs.
