Google maps in TS

Unread postby buzz456 » Sun Feb 15, 2026 12:48 pm

It's been a while since I did any route building. I went and got a new api key (What a f-ing nightmare that stuff is nowadays) entered it and how when I hit control G the blue wheels just sit there and spin. Have I got some setting wrong or is that messed up right now along with other stuff?

Hi Buzz,

Just to give you another data point, I did a quick check of my install and the google map overlay is working OK for me.

Tested with the latest, V79.0, running 64 bit.
Hamburg to Hanover Route .

Not sure what may be causing your issue, maybe there is a time delay to activate your API key

Talk about how to waste a perfectly good afternoon....Sheesh. It was all in that torturous Google pages getting the "right" config for the api key. Talk about how to make instructions as bad as you can make them so nomal people have no idea what you are talking about.
OK Rant off I got it to work.

Last time I had to get a "new" key it was no fun. Glad you got it figured out.

This happened to me over the holidays, my API account got closed for some unknown reason for the API only, the rest of my account continued to function fine. Reopening was a pain (several day process) and setting up again along with all the security features that were suggested to prevent unauthorized use by others. I just received an email to change the security stuff again the other day because my account is at risk due to changes they have made, more crap to learn and more time to waste again. This process is way too complicated and purely meant for developers and not hobbyists like us. What I wouldn't give for a current version of RW Decal like I used to use years back. I liked the RW Decal idea better than the later overlay integrated into TSC for many reasons. The main one is the imagery changes position (as much as 10 to 30m) from where I originally built stuff and I have to compensate the distance. When using RW Decal, the decal would always be positioned in the same exact area. I deleted my RW Decals long ago however somewhere on one of my old DVD backups from many years ago I have a backup folder of generated RW markers and RW Decals that still exists for my entire route that I am tempted to find and use instead of this headache we now have to use.

I get the blue circles spinning and forever! So what is the secret configuration?
This is why I came to a full stop on the FEC route and I have avoided "real" route building since. I thought it was something that I had/had not done.

Here is a good step by step that worked for me except 14.Click Save and then click Build from the main menu. (I think it meant to say drive instead of build.)

I must have done something wrong as it didn't work for me. I now have 2 API so I don't want to try again until I've resolved/removed them and right now I'm a bit sick of Google and their maps!!

Step 14 - After SAVE should be - shutdown TSC and restart then go to BUILD, then step 15.

Changing a setting only happens on a restart.

I've said it before I can't resist fiddling around in this game and I thought I'd give Mr Google another thrash and I discovered that the payment procedure which I set up 18 months ago was incomplete despite it repeatedly telling me that I had an existing account. Tied this up and then activation was offered and then ..........lo - a brave new world appears as by magic or at least by Googleometry.
It is now working. Now what the heck am I going to do with it...

You could raise your hand to do a little work on the Winchester-Western route if you are looking for something to work on.

I seem to recall offering to do road/grade crossings awhile ago or would you prefer me to try something else? In short what do you want me to do?
