Dash-8 40 CW HUD brake and throttle controls help requested

Unread postby OldProf » Sun Mar 01, 2015 11:48 am

I'm running into some problems using the F4 HUD train brake and Power Handle controls of this engine.

The Power Handle is a split design with 0 in the middle. It's easy to learn that the A key increases power, but how is the negative part used? When included scenarios begin, the power handle is set at -12% and I've found that lowering the power to -24% or more results in a whining sound from the engine, but doesn't seem to have a braking effect.

As for the train brake, it seems to be built upside down as far as its readings go. I've been able to use it, but cannot imagine that I'm doing so correctly.

Any useful tips appreciated, including references to users' manuals of other engines that feature similar controls. Complaints or general gripes about these controls not welcome, thanks.

Isn't the negative for the dynamic brakes?

That may make sense, since there is no specific F4HUD dynamic brake control, but how to use it? I'm beginning to think that the best course of action is to set up a simple free-roam scenario and experiment.

Like any other dynamic brake, a little at a time. The throttle can not be on while dynamic braking. This set up prevents you from doing just that.

What Bob said Tom and...

If you like keyboard commands use A to accelerate and D to decelerate like normal.
When you get to "0" in the middle just keep hitting D and the Dynamic Braking will gradually take hold. Or click and drag with the mouse in the HUD.
I usually use the mouse, but in the case of the Dash 9s which use that same type of split throttle, I find it easier to use the A and B keys.

I've also wondered about this engine as well with the brakes. When I seem to use this engine, I only have three braking positions. Released, 60% Limited, and Emergency. Instead of other locomotives like SD70ACe, you can move it to like 0% to 100%. Is this normal for the locomotive? To me it's not a big deal, as I can still stop the train, but found that a bit odd.

Ditto! I'm quite sure that I'm not using the brakes correctly . . . help, someone?

Don't know why the user's manual doesn't provide throttle & brake instructions.
