Hi,

Just found this little gem on youtube, a video "walkthrough" of the start-up procedures of a GP30.
And then found this great new forum to talk about it.

The video is a year old, so some of you may already know it.

Seeing this video and running Dave Brindley's models in RailWorks, I think it might even be possible to model the entire start up sequence in the sim. Maybe, maybe not. At any rate, one would need a lot of modeling (and coding!) skills. Maybe something to ponder about for future engine developments.

Those are power assembly torque valves.

From the notes on the Vid:

"Power Assembly Torque Valves. They are the C shaped handles sticking out of the engine block that are being turned. They release the compression on the cylinders, opening the cylinder chamber to the air. This is necessary for the next step, which is the blow down. The blow down is where you turn the engine over with the Torque Valves open to allow any unburnt fuel and collected water to escape the cylinders in order to prevent a hydro lock"
