"The "J" was also an early adopter of welded rail, installing its first 131-pound segments in the fall of 1943. While much more expensive than utilizing traditional joints, "ribbon" rail reduces maintenance and offers a smoother ride; by 1950 the EJ&E had installed 90 miles of its 175-mile network with CWR (continuous welded rail) and continued to do so after that time."
