Favorite Railroad-related Film

Grab a rock, have a seat, and talk about the real world of trains.

Well somebody already posted "Silver Streak".... so I'll go with a television show that was technically shot on film.

NBC's 1979 disco-themed show "Supertrain".....

NBC's The Today Show behind the scenes of Supertrain.... jump to the 2:13 mark...

It was an atomic powered train that went 200mph. Considered one of the biggest and most expensive flops in television history. The show's mock-up set alone cost $5 million (almost $16 million in today's dollars) and the show's failure helped put the NBC network near the brink of bankruptcy.

Here's the model after it accidentally crashed... a perfect metaphor for the show's fate...

But no other network show centered around a train, so I loved it. I was too young and enamored with this fact to realize the campy show and the acting in it actually sucked. *!embar*! !*roll-laugh*!

I loved watching Casey Jones (with Alan Hale Jr.) when I was a youngster. Now that I think of it, that must be when the seeds of my interest in vintage US steam were sown!

Just saw a new one a couple of days ago.
It was called "The Last Detail". It's about two Navy petty officers that have to take a prisoner to the Portsmouth Military Prison. It's got quite of bit of on train scenes and even some GG1 action.
Not a movie for young ones though.

A great early Jack Nicholson flick and one of my favorites! Lots of Penn Central action and I especially liked it as Portsmouth is only 30 minutes from home. !!*ok*!! Not actually shot at Portsmouth unfortunately, but they found a pretty good stand in.

Here's one to add to the list.
"Human Desire" based all around railroading... Has the likes of Glen Ford in it.

Well don't bother with Death Train staring the guy that played Emotep in the Mummy. It is not even a "B" movie.

I don't think anyone mentioned "The Bridge on the River Kwai" The movie centers more on the construction of the bridge, but if I remember correctly the railroad is the Burma Railroad. Also once the theme song gets stuck in your head well....

Some of the best train moves already mentioned that are in my movie collection are:
The Train
Emperor of the North
Von Ryan's Express
Unstoppable
Runaway Train
Dark Territory

And one for the Subway fans,
The taking of Pelham One Two Three
Cheers,

People have mentioned several of my favorites, like Sliver Streak, Breakheart Pass, The Train, The Professionals. But no one has mentioned Narrow Margin, an interesting Gene Hackman movie that mostly takes place on a train in BC.
