Parallel Systems is testing autonomous railcars for feasibility. Each railcar has electric motors mounted to each truck, and has multiple sensors, lights and cameras, controllers, and a battery providing power for up to 500 miles. They are designed to run at 25 mph and for grades up to 3%. Up to fifty of these cars can be linked together in their own consist called a platoon. Each car can hold one container. The electric brakes will allow the car to stop in 10 times less distance than a typical train. These cars can also be remotely monitored and controlled or controlled with a special hand held tablet. The first test section will be an isolated two mile section of track without grade crossings. They are also being tested in Australia where autonomous trains have been running since 2018.
