Experience the Union Pacific

Went to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento on Sunday and happened to see the Experience the Union Pacific train celebrating the 150th anniversary of completion of the transcontinental Railroad. It was pulled by a C44ACM and a C44AC. For those of you who are close by it will be at the Roseville Railyard on Tuesday 4/23/2019.

That was a pretty cool exhibit car, I liked the cameras that they use on the track geometry cars. I saw it on Friday after I got off work. Did you go into the museum to see Judah's map?

Yes, it was interesting to see the preparation for the celebration.

They did great work, since I'm volunteering less time than I used to, I've been out of the loop on whats going on. It was a nice surprise to see the locket and everything else they did in the Lost Spike corner.

Yeah this train passed Surf station here on the coast where I live on April 14th being pulled north by a pair of older SD70ACes.

I leave for Ogden this Thursday. The plan is to shoot video of some mainline action in Echo canyon. I'll catch the 844 coming in on Sunday and the Big Boy later that week. I'll be there for just over 2 weeks. Pretty pumped for this. I imagine it's gonna be pretty packed with foamers.

Yeah this train passed Surf station here on the coast where I live on April 14th being pulled north by a pair of older SD70ACes.

I leave for Ogden this Thursday. The plan is to shoot video of some mainline action in Echo canyon. I'll catch the 844 coming in on Sunday and the Big Boy later that week. I'll be there for just over 2 weeks. Pretty pumped for this. I imagine it's gonna be pretty packed with foamers.

(Personal;ly I think it will end up being 844, 4014 with an oily rag set alight in the smokebox and a couple of dismals for protection. I think after nearly 5 years, there is going to be a lot of egg on faces over this.) A real shame...

I just found out and came here to post about it, but you guys beat me to the punch. I’m in Fresno at my sister’s house having come here for Easter weekend and planned on leaving tomorrow for this trip. Now it is 2 weeks until they arrive and I had planned on staying there in the meantime after getting the 844 on video on Sunday. Now that there is no urgency to get there, I have to figure out what to do in the meantime.

I guess I’ll go to Tehachapi pass since it’s my safe standby spot I know I’ll enjoy and hit up Kelso on UP’s Cima sub when it cools down a bit. We are having an unseasonal heatwave here this week. Last year was my first time in Kelso and I loved it way more than I expected. It is in the bottom of the bowl of a desert valley where you can hear the trackbed and engine sounds from a train miles before it arrives. Plus it has a really nice grade going north towards Las Vegas with a lot of great access from the road at the beginning of its climb.

I gotta do something cuz I don’t want to go home and sit around for a week and a half.

I am man enough to admit it, but I (amonst many others) never thought they would even get close, let alone finish. Hats off to the work crew on getting it done, it just never needed to be left this late...

Has been some great footage posted, although one clip I saw at Speer, the dismal was definitely doing most of the work, not with that size consist there was actually much to be done.

Anyway, off to get a toothpick to get a feather stuck between a couple of molars.
