I see. I'd love to make a Railworks 3-truck Shay as J. Neils Lumber Company #5 someday. She's been under repairs for a while, but it get people's attention until it returns.
Funnily a Shay is really a steam version of a diesel
Sort of steam mechanical rather tham diesel electric.
As to price. I have not yet thought how to package these models. There will be two class Bs ( coal and oil), two class Cs ( c & o) at least one wood burning class A and some logging rolling stock. I will let you know neare release time. Early in the new year I hope.
Ok, good point about the wheel size. But diesels don't hang well on 9% grades, do they? Wasn't rail contact surface area the whole idea behind the big steamer wheels? Or... well, I guess a diesel of comparable size might... ??? Ok, I need to get SD40 sized stuff out of my head. Does it work because it is so small and the loads so light (compared to mainline RR's)?
well on a logging railroad the train lengths are usualy kept to a fiew cars.(1-15) these railroads had a tight radius so a long train would likely roal the rail in some corrners. the engine in the picture has 12 driving wheels, same as a modern diesel. as for the steep grades, having a short train meant less stress on the wheels, even on a 9% grade
so i have the shay's now and they are great! is it normal for the 3 truck shay not able to take tight corrners like the 2 truck versions? it seems that it can't even take the corners that the 2-8-0's can. the rear truck on the shay have no "play" in the whole end. on the real thing it will pivit due to a link between the fixed tender and the rest of the locomotive. i think it used the same U joint that viecles have in their driveshafts but i could be wrong. all i know is that they should be able to take tighter corrners than a 2-8-0. i hope this is just a bug that will eventually be worked out.
i can't even drive the 3 truck version on the mainline of the sherman logging company route that i am bulding. the routes mainline has no sharp turns but the shay still derails!!!! the rear truck will not move side to side in turn derailing the loco.
