June, 1967: the magnificent California Zephyr descends westbound through the canyon near Beldon. About half of the passengers, following the advice of Scott McKenzie, are heading to the Monterey International Pop Music Festival with flowers in their hair. The other half: going to the coast to be deployed to Vietnam.

It's a hot summer evening and UP 1983 leads this priority manifest out of Oroville with a SD9043MAC and ES44AC trailing, and an ES44AC and SD70M on the tail end.

An Uncommon Site

In 1960, due to a crash near Marston, up the line from Keddie. The CZ is seen going over the left hand of the Wye due to a detour. This detour has also made the train a few hours late. While the train is being controlled down hill, the engineer on the CZ in loco 805-A gives a wave and a toot to the waiting train being powered by GP-20 #2001. It would be fate that these two locomotives would end up together once again at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum as the last of there kind from the railroad
