I believe that the 3DC source for SMM signals will be included in the next RCAP release. These signals will have the light glow you are looking for, and have them LOD'd for distant viewing.

How many miles are the distance from 1 signal to the next?

AFAIK, there's really no set distance, though absolutes are easy as they're usually placed at diverging switches. A track chart will tell you for sure on the those + intermediates.

@PapaXpress - actually, your V20's have the latest and greatest technology. They are the brightest and have extra lenses with emissiveglow.fx that the older smm signals don't have.

In my opinion, the default signals in Railworks are horrid. Signals don't glow so brightly that you can see a halo from behind the signal (using an always-facing plane with AddATex glow), and the Approach lens is definitely the wrong color for North American signals.

There is no fixed distance for signals, though most of the ones used by the two RR's in my home state are usually about two miles apart. On NS single-mains, there is an absolute signal at the end of a passing siding, then a permissive signal a couple of miles down the track, then usually another absolute entrance to another siding. I don't know how it's done in the west and mid-west, as the Division and Sub-division distances are much greater.

On my UP track charts for the Roseville Division permissive signals are set ruffly every three miles. The exception would be if there was a siding between them which spanned two miles, which the permissive signals were ruffly a mile from the turnouts (all sidings are guarded with absolute signals... CTC country)

problem with the glow was having to make the signals more visible from a distance trade off it seems
