Hi all,
Looking for a few scenery objects and I find that they are only available for MSTS. Is there a route from an MSTS scenery object to a Railworks one?
Thanks,
Geoff

I'm pretty sure you have to have the source file to convert an MSTS model to RailWorks.

There is a converter somewhere for MSTS to some format you can load into a 3D package, but from a brief play with it a while back you end up remapping the object - which for a scenery object is probably 3/4 the time of building it anyway. Sorry, can't remember where it was either.

The program is
here. The website is in Italian, but if you scroll down to section "8. Scarica". There is a download link that says "eseguibile". I've used the program a few times and you don't have to remap the object every time, you just load the .ace texture files and add them to the model. Mind you this was done in 3DS Max. Then you just export the way you would into Railworks. (make sure the texture files are in your source folder, in a folder called textures). Follow the directions in the pdf below.

Using that converter can also put you in a position to be in copywrite violation if you're converting someone elses' work, if you plan on releasing anything or a route with converted models in it.

You should always get explicit permission ( even if it's blanket explicit permission given in the item's documentation ) before you reuse anyone's work anyway, no matter the source or what you've done with it.

Yea that's why I never release anything that I convert, I just use it on my routes and that's it.

that converter has alot of issues, i Have used it once, on some of ron picardi's models but i have explicit email permission from him to convert/modify and use it
its easier to just remake anything yourself - MSTS models are for the most part stone age anyway and the converter does a poor job of converting faces, it is alot of work generally easier to just make a new model

Also, not to mention, even if you do convert it you have to go through the trouble of contacting the original author before you can even release it. Including before you can release it with any kind of route as well.

i build all my objects from scratch, however for the mcgirts creek bridge ron had a dead on model, i emailed him and requested permission to modify it and use it and he agreed, however i doubt alot of others would agree so readily johns post is correct

Thanks guys, I rarely post anything I make (mostly because its not that good) I just fool around trying to make stuff look the way it does in the real world. All I need is some greenhouses!

Have you thought about making them yourself. I use a modeling program to make anything I want. Try the freeware Google Sketchup then if you can make something in it you'll be able to transfer it over to 3D Crafter Pro and finish it up. To me modeling things like buildings is really quite easy if you know how to draw out the basic shape.
3D Crafter Pro cost's money, but it's defiantly worth it.

This thread from UKTrainsim explains how to convert MSTS assets into RW assets. There is a conversion program listed about 5 posts down from the top.
