Could anyone with experience in 3DS Max tell me why some of my models export out of 3DS Max with these lighting glitches?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume it has something to do with smoothing groups but, I would appreciate some advise on what causes this and how to prevent it from happening.
TIA

Looks more like geometery problems .. all your verts welded in the offending areas ? don't have the odd face flipped ? ... wires would a help maybe . For these kind of problems best to try an STL modifier to see if you can spot problem areas.

Try working on the smoothing groups on the modify panel. Give to all polygons pointing in one axis direction (X, Y, Z) one smoothing group. Like all polygons pointing in the X direction, smoothing group 1. All polygons pointing in Y direction, smoothing group 2, and all polygons in Z direction, smoothing group 3.

Thanks for the advice. It was geometry problems. I'm trying to be a little to cheap on polys and removing edges where I shouldn't be. Found some unwelded verticies, and the like.
