A Simple Shed

Well, that's what I thought at first. The base Blender model was done in about an hour or so. But details like the vents, LODS, texturing and baking... that's another story. However, thanks to the family stubbornness gene, I finally came up with something that actually resembles a shed. Somehow, I managed to bake 3 separate textures into one and bake in the ambient occlusion. My workflow notes are sketchy at best, so more practice will be needed.

If there's one thing I learned from this exercise... keep versioning your Blender file so you have a fall back point. Because I can tell you from first hand experience, having that fall back point comes in really handy when you're messing up... I mean learning a new Blender skill.

Good work. I have tons of scale drawings from Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman but have been cautious about starting the 3D graphics process. Proud of you.

The textures are from textures.com. I just searched for seamless textures, and downloaded the "free" small size when I found something that looked useful. The hardest part was trying to get the steel siding / roof corrugation textures scaled right so the corrugations didn't look too big or too small on the model.

Harry - I'm like you... I've got boxes of old model railroading magazines stashed away. I know there is a whole treasure of plans tucked away in those magazines just waiting to be scanned. One neat Blender thing I learned recently is that you can set a background image to model against, and even have a different image depending on whether you are in front, side, back, and so on.

Looks good, but I think it could use a little window, would look even better that way.
