The educational edition has a three year life, the user needs $1470 a year forever for a subscription to continue.

So using the student edition seems like a fruitless venture unless the user is rich.

Learn Blender, Blender is free and easy to use. Have an old 3DS Max and Blender is easier with the available addons.

Did the Railworks vehicle tutorial in 3DS Max many years ago:

Have used all the modeling software 3d crafter, Blender, 3DS Max, Gmax, TrainSimModeler.

You could start off making a cantilever signal just without the lights. Thats what I did the first time and I got it accurate.
