There's one spot in the yards at Johnstown, near the river, where the fps drops below 15 if you look over at the lights, but jump back up to the 60s as soon as you look the other way.

It's true that lights have an impact on performance, but I suspect the drop in fps you're seeing is that there's more going on in the scene near the lights than the lights themselves causing the slowdown, most likely track or too much alpha-stacking in view.
Cheers!

Thanks, I got it now. I just need to figure out the settings for the spotlight to get the correct shine.

Please let us know what process you used to make this happen. I want to make a few models with lights and need to how to do it as well. Thank you sir !*salute*!

Nope, definitely the lights. As an experiment, I deleted just the lights in that area and that restored the fps.

What part would you like to know... The night lights or the spot light?

I would like to know what blueprint you used and how to find it in the blueprint editor. I am currently making a steam era locomotive wash rack that has it's own lighting and I want them to work in game so users don't have to place other sources of lighting. !*salute*!

For streetlights, sides of buildings, and any general lighting use Point Light blueprints. For yard lights, billboards, or wherever you need a focused beam of light use Spot Light blueprints.

To find the list of blueprints you can use on a model took a bit of research. Open the blueprint editor. Go to you source folder and right click on the folder of your model...not the model itself. Then choose "add" then choose "blueprints". That will give you a list of all the blueprints.

Ok, I'm now ready for the next item that I'd like to make for Railworks. However, there are a few problems.
First off, here is what I'd like to make.

2015-11-09 155349.jpg

This is a prototypical 40 line telegraph pole that was used on the Lehigh Valley Route I'm working on. The picture is the model in Trainz.

The problem I'm having is I'm not sure how to go about making this for Railworks. As it sits, this is a high poly model...especially the insulators. However I do have 4 LOD levels of the insulators.
Now I could make it so the insulators are using a view facing material, but I'm not sure if that will look right. I'm kind of a stickler on having a more realistic model. I'm not sure which way to go.

What is the best way to make this model?

Definitely make the insulators view facing, as the poly can easily get out of hand.

The rest is relatively easy. Some info on the subject can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=12632
Cheers!

view facing like the 2d trees would be the way to go with the insulators for sure, you wont even notice a difference at any sort of speed going down the track weather its 5mph or 50mph

Ok, I'll get to work on them using view facing...lets see where it goes.

I thought I'd share a sneak peak at some of the other models I've been working on.
After all the track work is laid out on the route, the second task will be bridge building. My goal in the portion of the project is to make or find typical bridges (both road and rail) that where used in the area. This will mean that some truss bridges will need to be made. The first one that I've been working on is the Coxton Bridge that sit next to Coxton Yard in Pittston. This bridge which is still (amazingly) still standing today has not been used since the early 70's.

I guess you can see why it's not being used.

I decided that this model must be done so here is a unskewed span of the bridge.
coxton span.jpg

Once all the bridges are in place, it's time to move on to some railroad infrastructure. I started making the roundhouse at Coxton. Only a small porting of the roundhouse still exsist today as most of the structure burnt down in 1983. Here is an aerial view of the roundhouse in it's glory days...around 1938.

I started working on the model on this structure some time ago. It needs to be textured and converted over the Railworks standards. The picture below shows the model of the roundhouse as it currently sits. The turntable portion of the model will be taken out since I'll be using the HSC turntable. It may be a challenge to match up all 33 stalls.
