Solid Modeler Conversion in 3d Canvas

Tips and discussion about scenery creation for RailWorks.

Solid Modeler Conversion in 3d Canvas

Unread postby hminky » Tue Feb 15, 2011 1:19 pm

I worked in the Engineering field and used Pro Engineer for solid modeling. Models made in ProE and other engineering programs can be imported into "artsy" modelers but the models have a whole bunch of polys.

That is a cattle loader I developed in ProE to make a "live" model for my old On30 Pacific Coast Air Line Railway. It has 2886 polys after importing an STL model into 3d Canvas8. I developed the model in ProE Wildfire Student Edition-Personal Use.

After consolidating the faces in 3d Canvas the models were down to 810 polys:

The Trainz import forgive the texturing:

The MSTS import:

Still working on the RailWorks install. Took about two minutes for the other sims.

Hope that helps someone

Very nice. !!*ok*!! I could definitely use such an asset. Given my limited understanding of 3D modelling tools... sounds like a pretty advanced export/import technique you've got going there.

The usual unfriendly Railworks system, I have had very poor results getting anything into Railworks. The others take two minutes. If I was a comspiracy theorist I would say it is difficult to sell their DLC.

That doesn't really help for finding what you are doing wrong.

Got it to work, left the category box as "uncategorized". Put a different texture thinking that was the problem. D-oh! does only take two minutes.

Need to work out the size issues on importing the STL into 3d Canvas.

So easy a caveman can do it.

Edit: Back when I was buildin' model trains I bought the Evan Designs Model Builder for making paper buildings. This was the texture from their sample building.

For the paint shop challenged it has possibilities.

Hi,

Having said the following...

And the reality being....

Dont you think it would be a polite thing to at least say that human error and not RW was the true cause.

No, I stand by my first statement. I have yet to get a Railway Vehicle to work in RailSimulator or RailWorks. The labyrinth that is the BluePrint editor is a mess. !*hp*!

Having a category, "uncategorised", that results in a model not to show up in the game is really not polite. !*don-know!*
