The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railway, an interurban that ran between its namesake cities until 1963. A work in progress.

Description

CHICAGO NORTH SHORE AND MILWAUKEE RAILWAY An Interurban Railway for Trainsimulator 2013 V0.1, 5/20/2013

HISTORY

The Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee was incorporated in 1896 as a streetcar system in Waukegan IL. It eventually expanded to Chicago and Milwaukee as the Chicago and Milwaukee Railway. It became the Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee Railway in 1916. The CNS&M, or "North Shore Line", was known for its fast, convenient service along the North Shore communities of Chicago. Everything could be found on the line, from local streetcars, to fast limited trains with parlor and dining cars, to the Streamlined Electroliners. It was one of the first railroads to embrace Piggyback freight service, and ran a full interchange Lcl freight operation. It was a fast interurban, with the passenger trains hitting 85 mph routinely to meet the schedule. Stiff competition from the parallel Chicago and Northwestern, and the advent of the Interstate Highway System finally caught up to the North Shore Line, and it was abandoned on January 21st, 1963.

THE ROUTE

This virtual incarnation represents the North Shore Line in it's final years, 1955-1963. The North Shore's Chicago Terminal was at Roosevelt Road, a few blocks south of the Loop on the Chicago Transit Authority "L". Trains used the L to Howard St, where they gained their own ROW. A few miles west, the change to overhead wire from 3rd rail was made. The Principal operations during this period were local trains to Mundelein and Waukegan, IL, and Limited trains to Milwaukee. In Milwaukee, the trains took to 5th and 6th St's to make a bee-line to a terminal at 6th and Michigan St. Included in this route is everything, from Roosevelt Road Chicago, to Mundelein IL, to Milwaukee WI. The route is approximately 97 miles in length.

PROGRESS

This route is currently Very much a beta. Almost all the route miles are there, (barring about 5 miles of existing Shore Line trackage to Highwood, IL). Platform markers and platforms are placed at appropriate points throughout the route, to provide a sense of location. Many sidings have been placed, sans markers. Between Waukegan, IL and Mundelein, IL, and Howard St Chicago, the trackage is pretty much complete with most all sidings in place. North of waukegan, the track is a 2 track finger reaching Milwaukee. At Milwaukee, the trackage is complete, from the Harrison St shops to the downtown terminal. Scenery is placed at Lake Bluff, and for 1 block in Milwaukee. The Chicago L is in a state of suspension, while Marc Nelson of 3DTrains constructs an approprite track section to replace the Scalerail Opendeck section that I used. Speed limits have not been implemented yet, (just expiramentally on the Mundelien Branch), so use caution and judgement when approaching any curve, espcially On the Chicago L and around Lake Bluff-North Chicago. Signalling is pending the release of V2 of the RCAP. A model of a North Shore Line interurban car is included, however it is very basic and uses cab/sounds/physics from the default German BR101 electric. If you want something that operates more realistically, I find the Southern 2BIL and Brighton Belle train sets by Richard Scott on UKTrainsim to be an ok substitute.
